2. Where do you want to go?

Virtual Vacation - Questions&Activities

"Where do you want to go?"
Working stage 2

Each  "Discussion Questions" and "Activities" are optional. Decide with your students what questions to answer, what activities to work on and which final products you will share here.

Usually, the learning process starts with a face-to-face discussion in a classroom or some other meeting place.  After the discussion, conclusions and views are shared with peers through the personal pages in Kidspace.

2. Phase:Where do you want to go?
Finished sending your invitation ? Got any invitations?

Now it is time to read through the invitations and find out where you want to go on vacation. There are lots of things you have to think about when traveling and you will certainly get to know many new things.

Can you learn from their answers what you need to know? You can also ask more by adding comment or by Kidmail.

Discussion Questions
  1. Where would you like to go? What makes places interesting to you?
  2. Have you traveled in your own country? What did you find most interesting? What did you like best?
  3. Have you been abroad? How did you like that? What did you find most interesting? What did you like best?
  4. What kind of food is traditional in the areas that you are travelling to? Do you think you will like it? Do you think you could survive having to eat food that is different from what you are used to?
  5. What languages do you speak? In which countries can you use them? How can you prepare yourself for a vacation in a country whose language you do not know?
  6. What rules are there for kids in the places that are offered for visiting? Are they similar to the rules you are used to at home? Will your parents accept that you follow those different rules while you are away?
  7. Do you want to visit a place where you have been before or see a new place?
  8. Does the weather (climate) matter when you plan a vacation?
  9. Do you want to see homes of famous people, authors, singers or sport-idols?
  10. Do you want to visit places you have learned about?
  11. Do you need more information than there is in the invitations? How are you going to organise getting further information and plan your trip?
  12. Can we travel to the country you have chosen by car or do we have to travel by plane or even go on a ship? Do you need to use more than one way to travel there?

Activities

  1. Work in groups of four and look the invitations through. Do you all agree? How do you solve a disagreement? Do you vote? Are there other ways for you to reach a decision?
  2. Compare how long it takes to go to the places you are interested in. Do you think it matters how long the trip takes?
  3. Collect the invitations that interest you most and put them on the billboard to help you to make the choice.
  4. Create a Venn diagram of opportunities. Does the place have exciting history, nature, entertainment, exciting people to visit?
  5. Choose a place for your virtual vacation. Discuss why you would choose this particular place for your vacation. Find the place on the map and put a flag there. Find out about the latitude and longitude of the place you have chosen.
  6. Find the place on the map. Is it in the northern or in the southern hemisphere? Is it close to the ocean or is it inland? Do you think the climate is warm or cold? Is there a great difference in time between your home and this place?
  7. Go to the school-library and ask if they have some books about the place you have chosen. Maybe you can find a CD-ROM with information about countries!
  8. What about the Internet? I am sure you will be able to find many interesting resources about countries there!
  9. Set up a budget for the trip, including transportation, accommodation, food, entertainment, museums, sport events, etc.
  10. Prepare to present your choice to your class. When all have prepared their presentations, every group presents its choice to the class and the class discusses which place they think is the most exciting to visit. Find out from your budget if you can afford to go to this place. Then cast your votes.
  11. Each person in the group has the amount equal to .....  to spend on the trip. Will it be enough? What can you buy for this amount in the place you are going to visit?
  12. The whole class or group doesn't have to go to the same place. Maybe you would like to split up into two groups and go separate ways.
  13. When you have chosen where to go as "virtual" tourists, please send your message to the room informing everybody of your decision.
