2009 Hunt for Country Capitals

Welcome to the 2009 Hunt for Country Capitals.  I hope you will join us as we travel the globe armed with clues to find the solution!

Summary of the game:

Each site chooses a country capital anywhere in the world and develops 9 clues about that capital. ALL clues AND the capital chosen are sent to the organizer of the game. Each Monday for 3 weeks during the game, one set of 3 clues from each participating site will be posted on this site.  During each week clues are posted, each participating site may ask ONE yes/no question of each site playing the game. Direct guesses are not permitted until the third week.  After the 3 weeks of clues, participating sites will have one week to try and guess the country capital each site has chosen.

The week after the guesses are sent in, a tally is posted of all participating sites and a winner declared.  The winner is determined by the location that has the highest number of guesses correct. A team's own site is not included in the scoring

This year we will run two levels of the game which will run at the same time.  Please read below  to see what level to register your team for.

Levels

The entry level is designed for students in grades 7 and lower(approximately 13 and younger) and for students who are using English as a second language.  This level will be limited to no more than 15 teams. If more than 15 teams register then the additional teams may be placed on a waiting list.  If there are enough teams, there will be two groups playing at the entry level.   Students who are eligible for this level may choose to participate in the advanced level, however older students should not participate in the entry level unless they meet language requirements.  Students may not participate in more than one Hunt for Country Capitals game each year. In writing the clues, students in the entry level must also include the latitude of their capital rounded to the nearest ten degrees as the fifth clue..

The Advanced game is for students in grades 8-12 (approximately 14 and older) as well as students in lower grades who wish to take on the challenge.  One change in the rules this year is that for the Advanced game, teams may choose a capital of a country that no longer exists.

Skills used and benefits:

The primary objective for participants would be to use the game to teach students to use the WWW as a reference in conjunction with other reference materials. Basically, the game is a "how to find and access" information. Deductive and inductive reasoning skills must also be used in figuring out where to look for information based on clues given by other sites. An increased interest in and knowledge of geography and history is a secondary benefit of playing the game.

Timeline:

The project/game will run from September 16 – November 9. Total time involved will be 5 weeks with results being posted the 6th week.

Class time involved:

How many classes you involve, age of students, number of available online computers, other reference materials available, and how much class time you wish to devote to "research skills" will determine how much class time you will use to play the game. This game is ideal for a 6 week "exploratory" type class in computers or telecommunications but can be played by a single class with only one computer capable of going online.  The contact person must be willing and able to supervise their participants so that responses to other teams are handled in a timely and thoughtful manner.  Good sportsmanship is critical for the enjoyable of all participants
