Religious and national holidays bring us
together for family gatherings at various times of the year. All of us don't
celebrate major festivals in the same month. Some of us light candles and
give each other presents at certain times of the year while others have different
traditions. Some have family gatherings and eat lots of good food, while
others are not celebrating or perhaps are fasting.
Let's have some fun this week by acknowledging
and celebrating the relationships in our lives.

Questions
What family holidays
does your family celebrate? How do you celebrate them? Do you have special
meals or gatherings? Do you sing special songs and wear special clothes?
Do you play special games at these celebrations? Tell us about your holidays
in the KidComWho-Am-I? room.
Are there certain members
of your family that you only get to see on these holidays? Which family member
do you enjoy seeing the most? Why is this so? What makes this person special
to you?
Is there a special
person in your family who cooks a delicious food for your holiday celebration?
Who is the "best cook" in your family? Share his or her recipe with us if
it is not a family secret!
Does your family travel
to be with other family members on holidays? Do you travel far? Can you go
by car or must you take an airplane or train?
How do you feel about
this travel if you must do it? Must you go with your family? Do you ever
feel that you are too old to travel with your family? Would you rather spend
holiday time with your friends instead?
How do you and your
friends celebrate special occasions? Do you have parties for birthdays and
graduations?
Are there parties in
school for holidays? How do you celebrate? Do you have graduations for certain
classes or courses you take? Are parents invited? Do you decorate the party
area?
Are there holidays
celebrated at your school that you are not allowed by your religion to
participate in? How does this make you feel?
Are you allowed to
practice your religious customs in your school? Some students fast during
Ramadan. Do you think they should still have to go to the lunch area with
their class?
Does your school close
during your religious holidays? If it doesn't do you think it should?

Activities
Now is the chance to
write a poem or a song to the new friends you have made in this program.
You might have got a friend for life. Perhaps some of you will go on writing
e-mails long after this project ends. Pictures or drawings are welcome or
you can make web pages, if you prefer. Make a special greeting card for a
family member or buy someone a present. Don't forget the new people you have
met through this project by exchanging greetings and messages in the
KidComWho-Am-I? room. This is your chance to say farewell, or
to make plans to continue the relationships.
Send a short voice
file (10 seconds) to some of your new friends. Use the sound recorder in
Windows if you use that platform and send the file as an attachment to e-mail.
Plan a festival, just
as you would like it to be, and describe it to your on-line friends. Invite
us to your party, tell us about what you'd like us to eat and what kind of
traditions you have. Will there be stories told or will you sing special
songs? Will there be dancing perhaps? Will you make special decorations?
Tell us about it...
Kidproj has a
Multi-Cultural Calendar
with lots of festivals and celebrations. Add the descriptions of your festivals
on the Multi-Cultural Calendar web page.
Create a Family Recipe
Book for your family by collecting favorite recipes in your family. Perhaps
mom or dad would help you make copies for special relatives.
