Suggestions

for KHouse staff, technology facilitators, and other computer lab helpers
of teachers and students participating in
Who-Am-I?

TO DO JUST ONCE AT THE BEGINNING OF THE PROGRAM
 

1- Teachers join the KidCom room for teachers of their language of preference. In the following days, they read messages in the room, answer and participate whenever they want. They can use the welcome messages they receive as motivation to practice and write again.

2- Teachers let their students register, and use the KidCom rooms for students.

3-Teachers, or moderators of other work groups register their school, group, or participating NGOs, and provide the name and email of the person in charge of moderating the module. Kidlink gathers this information to keep track of teachers and students doing the program. This makes it easier to help participants. Please recheck that the submitted registration information is correct.

WORK TO DO ON EACH MODULE

1- Before starting the module, and before meeting with students, teachers will study the program's goals, activities, resources, and select the activities they want to present to their students. The KHouse staff should present some activities to the school teachers as examples. Browse works done by students in other years for ideas.

2- At least one week before starting the module, school teachers should prepare the connection to their curriculum . This is important because teaching students how to send and receive emails, use copy and paste, save images in other format and publish in KidSpace, will take time. Later, when teachers do other modules, their students will be able to do these tasks more easily.

When preparing for the first module, it is a good idea to plan for more than the 8 weeks (1 or 2 more weeks). Teachers must also allocate time for students to answer the 4 Kidlink's questions if they have not already done so.

Suggest to teachers that they make hard copies of the discussion questions for each module for their students so that they can read them and select the questions they want to discuss. This may save them some time when the kids come to the lab. They might also let students take the papers home and think about them before they sit in front of the computers. Time in the lab is usually limited, and this might help.

3- When the above items have been completed, the KHouse staff starts planning their work with students in the computer lab:

a- Plan how to support shool teachers with activities using the Internet. Use the resources listed in each lesson plan. If you find a resource that we don't have in our list, please let us know. (Example: Suggest a new resource for the second module.) Consider challenging the students to search for information. For example, in the "Where Do I live?" module, they can find information about their country, their city, etc.

b- Challenge students to work on acronyms, drawings, graphics, etc. They easily get bored if they only write all the time. Mix writing with varied creative activities that make learning more fun.

c- Organize how and when you will support the work for each lesson, when you will post in the KidCom room, when you will publish to KidSpace. Completion dates are tentative as you will be changing them as time goes on. Calculate how long you will stay on each lesson, because some schools may have select many more activities to do on one lesson than others. Organize your timeline having this in mind.

While all 4 lessons are required in the first module, teachers may pick and choose lessons for each of the other modules. This gives them (and you) more time to do the lessons they have chosen to be more relevant.

d- Until you have taught the kids to publish by themselves, you should have a directory or folder for each of the modules on your permanent disk. In this directory, create one directory for each group. There, you should keep all the works from the kids: texts, graphics, pictures, etc. This will enable you to find students' files easily when they want to make changes, finish something, or publish the work to KidSpace .

4- In each class, students must do something related to the module: write a message or part of a message, make a drawing, search the Web, etc.

a- Each lesson generally lasts about 2 weeks. We suggest that students start to write the first week and make corrections and finish publishing on the second week. This way productivity you obtain will be higher. Students will be able to add anything they have created that week in class. They should prepare their works in a word processor (like Word or WordPad). This will allow you to open it the following week to finish, and you will also have the document on your disk to publish in KidSpace. Ask school teachers that are with students in the computer lab to give them ideas on how to improve their work.

b- Drawings, graphics, etc. must be saved in .jpg and .gif  format for publishing in KidSpace. The students can make them in Paint, PowerPoint, or any drawing program you have. When they are ready you have to select: FILE- SAVE as- then select the file type as .gif or .jpg

5- Not as many students may participate in the program at the start of the year as they do later in the year. You may have to plan more time for students to read and answer the increased level of new messages.

6- At the end of each lesson, when work is all done, the students must post them in the KidCom room. You must teach the kids how to do it themselves. By teaching them to post, you can focus on helping slower students. Note that attachments, drawings, or pictures should be published in KidSpace, or on the Kidlink web. That is why we suggest that you keep everything organized for each student.

7- Images and graphics you have to publish into KidSpace (.jpg or .gif) You can do this at the end of each lesson or do everything at the end of each module. In the first module, you have to do this work yourself because the students get the login at password after they answer the 4 questions. The students will be able to do this work by themselves on the other modules and teachers will only have to approve their published pages.

8- Last week of the module, teachers have to:

a- evaluate their own and their students' work in the module, and send a report to the discussion list for teachers.

b- prepare the connection to their curriculum for the next module.

TO DO AT THE END OF THE FIRST MODULE

At the end of the first module, each student should update their answers to the 4 Kidlink questions as posted on their KidPages. It is a good idea to let them update their answers regularly..
