A Language's Reason To Be

Valuable knowledge will be lost when a language dissappears...
UNESCO's Endangered Languages Programme | Endangered languages

Art by Erika (14), girl, Italy , 2003

"The larger issue is that each language expresses a particular culture and tradition which has formed through ages . Loosing a language often means loosing the cultural tradition and heritage since we loose with it expressions, examples, proverbs , songs, poetry which express what another language may not be able to exactly duplicate and hence the richness and flavour which makes living a delight may be lost forever." - C. Indira Dasgupta, India.

"Only one culture, one language, one economy etc? Or do we have something of our own? A language, as a medium of transferring information, also transfer the traditions, norms, ideologies and living style of its origin. And not necessarily we need all this stuff. We should. I will quote one example that the english books of school, college and university level have heroes and heroins of a very different culture. The symbols of passion, love, hate, bravery and courage are very different from our own historical figures. and same case must be with other countries. In case we are convinced to adopt any foreign language to form main discourse of our language, we should determine whether we need only the language or its accesseries too." - Amer Khan, Pakistan.

"... we will be loosing out a lot of creativity, experiences, literature and knowledge, which other languages provide. [However,] people who know at least two or more than two languages draw more from life than those who command a single language. Because their knowledge base is wider, richer and they can draw a lot from other languages." - Rahul, India.
