Travelling to Arendal

The main road from Oslo, called the E 18, is a modern highway to high standards for most of the way. The distance from Oslo is about 260 km (160 miles).
There is a car ferry from Hirtshals in Denmark to Kristiansand, which is about 70 km (45 miles) southwest of Arendal. This runs several times a day during summer. Another daily car ferry runs from Fredrikshavn in Denmark to Larvik, which is about midway between Oslo and Arendal.
There is also a car ferry from Newcastle, England to Stavanger on the west coast of Norway, about 316 km (200 miles) away.

By Bus

By Air

If coming from another country, your would usually research these two options:

  • Fly to Copenhagen (CPH), and take a direct flight to Kjevik Airport (KRS)
  • Fly to Oslo Airport Gardemoen, then onwards to Kjevik Airport (KRS)

Fares vary depending on what airline(s) you are using to get through either Copenhagen or Kjevik.

KLM often quotes attractive fares for those travelling from afar. They are cooperating with the local Braathens airline, which flies between Oslo and Kjevik. Braathens also cooperates with Northwest.
SAS, which also have many flights within Norway, cooperates with Maersk, which flies between Copenhagen and Kjevik, as well as between Oslo and Kjevik. SAS is part of the Star Alliance, which comprises airlines such as Atlantic Airways, Air Baltic, Air Botnia, Air Canada, Air NZ, All Nippon Airways, Ansett Australia, British Midland, Cimber Air, Estonian Air, Grønlandsfly, Icelandair, Lufthansa, Maersk Air, Quantas, Singapore Airlines, Skyways, Spanair, South African Airways, Thai, United Airlines, Varig, Widerøe, Air New Zealand. Austrian Air. British Midland. Mexicana Airlines.
In the past, it was usually possible to get very attractive rates from "outsider" airlines where Norway was a remote location. For example, you could get yourself extremely attractive rates from Stockholm to Oslo using Aeroflot, the Russian airline. Whether such great deals are still available remains to be seen. Good hunting!

Kjevik Airport, Kristiansand is about 70 km (45 miles) away. The airport has daily direct connections to Oslo, Stavanger, and Copenhagen. Copenhagen has direct connections to most of the world.
Oslo Airport Gardemoen has direct connections to most major airports in Europe, and via Copenhagen to the world. Stavanger has direct connections to London, Copenhagen, Amsterdam and others.
There are direct bus services between Kjevik and Arendal for all airplane arrivals and departures.

By Train

There's a train service over the mountains from Oslo. A nice trip, indeed. From Kristiansand, we recommend the bus unless you fancy a considerable detour. You can also go by train from Stavanger to Arendal. If coming from downtown Europe, you can even go up Jutland by train, across Kattegat to Kristiansand, and then onwards to Arendal.
