Why the United States Celebrates Black History Month

For years in the United States, African Americans that made a significant contribution to U.S. history did not appear in our history books. In 1964 the US Congress passed Public Law 88-352 (78 Stat. 241). The provisions of this civil rights act forbade discrimination.  In1976, Black History Week was expanded to Black History Month. Ever since then, Black History Month has been celebrated in February around the country.
