Compose your Music

For the teachers:

  • save a version of the samples on a floppy-disk or in a protected area of your hard disk, so that you can always have the original file (your students can work with copies)
  • the melody is usually written in track no. 4
  • if you use Cakewalk software, you will find further information in song info (menu file - info...)
  • the selected samples are real songs (some are well known songs) which have been cut, shortened, simplified for teaching purposes (develop a sensitivity to the aesthetic qualities of music performed or heard, understand a suggested form, key and/or scale, improvise within simple harmonic patterns, etc.)
  • if you do not have a sequencing software for MIDI files, you can download, after free registration, the program Quartz AudioMaster (®Digital Sound Planet) in freeware version
  • you also need to download the musical font file and install it in Windows in the folder Fonts following this procedure:
    • Copy the file MusicalSymbols (MUSICAL.TTF) in a Temp folder in your hard disk
    • Go to Start, Settings, Control Panel, and open the Fonts folder
    • Click File menu and choose Install new font
    • Choose the Temp folder where you saved the file MUSICAL.TTF
    • Select the font (tick the box "Copy fonts in font folder" then OK
    • Now it is better to restart the system.

If using Quartz AudioMaster software you get an error message about the musical fonts you just installed, do not worry... it will work!

To listen to midi files you only need a Sound Blaster or a musical module (in this case the quality is better).
In "Samples" section, you can download samples of songs to compose your own music.
See the program change numbers for general midi instruments.
To help your students in their music compositions, print the minor and major scales.
