Adopt a whale

  • Select a whale type
  • Register information about length, weight and how it looks
  • Draw a picture of the whale
  • What does your whale eat?
  • What is the temperature in the sea where your whale lives? Can it live anywhere in the world? Does it travel a lot?
  • How many whales do exist of the type of whale you selected?
  • Create a homepage for your whale on the WWW.

Write about whales

  • Write a poem on a whale or whales. How might it feel to be a whale? How would you feel if you saw whale. If you where an animal living in the sea how would you feel when you met a whale?
  • Write a short story that has whales in it. Either as a "person" in the story or where the persons in the story meet a whale.
  • Take part in writing a ping-pong story about a whale. Ping pong story is a story where one class or individual starts the story, next group adds to it and then another. In the end you might have a totally different story from the one you expected to see in the beginning. The story could also be hypertext story with different ending and things happening based on how you read the story and select links.
  • Write an essay on whales based on the information you get from the project or elsewhere.
  • How has the relationship between whales and humans been. Do you know any tales, stories or ledgends from your part of the world where whales are mentioned?

Whalewatching

  • If you have went on a whalewatching trip share with the others in the project how the trip was. Did you see whales? What kind of whales? Was it cold? Did you get seasick? How was it organised by the whalewatching company to help you to see the whales?
  • Where in the world did you travel from? Are there many whales living there? Do you think people should go watching whales in the sea? Can it be dangerous?
  • Create your own virtual whalewatching company on the www. How would you offer trips? What could your clients see?

Whale hunting

  • Who hunt whales? Why do they do it? Do you think that some people on earth should be allowed to hunt whales? Why? Why not? What is done with the whale meat? How is it prepared for sale?
  • Some say that the whales are eating to much of the fish in the sea so there is lesser fish. Do you think it is right to protect one specy of the sea and not the others?
  • Some people like whale meat a lot. Do you know people who have eaten whales. Did they like it. would you like to taste it? Do you know of recipies of whale dinners?
  • Some whales get killed when fishermen are fishing. What happens to those whales?
  • Do you think that the whale is different from other animals that the human beeing is eating?
  • Some have hunted whales for aquariums. Do you think that is right? How do you think a whale feels in an aquarium? Is it important for kids and grown ups to be able to see the whales in aquariums?

Famous whales

Keiko is a Killer Whale that was hunted in eastern Iceland 1979 and brought to USA where he has lived since then. Now it is planned to move Keiko to the Westman Islands in Iceland and free him.
  • Have you seen Keiko? If so where did you see him? In a movie? In an aquarium?
  • The sea around Iceland is cold and rough, do you think that Keiko would like it there after warm pools in USA?
  • Do you think that people in USA will miss having him there? Do you think that the kids in the Westman Islands will like to have him there?
  • Search for information on Keiko and his release.
  • Is there something in your media on Keiko's release?
  • Do you think he will survive?
