31st August is Malaysia’s National Day. My friends and I have decorated our classroom with Malaysian flags. We also put up photos of our leaders. Many people fly our national flags at their houses and cars. This year, we celebrate our 47th National Day. We got our independence from the British on 31st August 1957. Before the British, the Dutch ruled over us and the Portuguese before them. On National Day, we have the Merdeka (means Independence in Malay Language) parade early in the morning. Many school children, companies, government offices and social groups take part in the parade. It is very colourful and interesting to watch. I interviewed 4 friends and 3 of my family members to find out how they celebrate National Day. Here is what they said: Grandfather (age 66) : Be happy and celebrate by having a good lunch with retired friends. Thank God for our freedom! Father (age 35) : I go to church and I pray to God to keep my country safe. Mother (age 35) : I like to watch the National Parade on TV. Synn-Yi (age 8) : I invited my cousin brothers and sister and we have a party in my house or in a restaurant. Lynn-Yi (age 8) : We go to the temple and pray to the God and we have a good lunch or dinner. Ann-Ni (age 8) : I have a party and I visit my grandmother. Fahim (age 8) : We play games and join drawing competition at the Merdeka Square. Happy Merdeka! By Ann |
