Project Proposal KIDLINK - SONG Time: 1 March 94 to 8 May 94 Moderators Net-Work: Wolfgang Reinfeldt Music : Gerd Walter It is the objective of the KIDSONG - Project to compose and arrange a piece of pop-music in an international cooperation. With the help of electronic equipment (computer and electronic keyboard) it is possible to produce songs of considerable quality. With the assistance of an experienced person even kids who don't have special skills with musical instruments can step by step play the different parts on a keyboard, combine and edit them to make their own impressing piece of music - drums, guitars, brass, violins, bass,... almost whatever instrument they like. The notes are stored in the MIDI file format and can be played by different types of hardware. The product can be recorded on an audio cassette but also be presented live together with singers and real instruments. Midi files can be transferred via e-mail, uuencoded just like picture files. This opens the possibility to cooperate inter- nationally to produce a common KIDLINK-song. Because we wouldn't like to end up with an unrelated conglomerate, it seems necessary to start with a common skeleton of melody, rhythm and chords. This will be supplied by a group of students from Oldenburg. The different participating groups of kids will add new parts, solos and variations according to their own liking. Other participants may provide a song TEXT in their own language. This is how you participate: Step 0: Find a music expert Probably most of the active kids or kidleaders are not experienced with arranging songs. So you'd have to look for a partner who has got the equipment : keyboard with midi interface, some computer (ATARI, PC, Mac ...), a sequencer program, that is able to read and write MIDI- Files (preferably GENERAL MIDI). Such persons are not as rare as you might think, they could be senior students, music teachers, members of an amateur band etc. Please tell us if you want to participate. We'll send technical details of exchanging midi-files. When you have found your expert, please send us a short midi-file, just a few bars of any kind of music that has been made by your equipment. This is only a test to make sure, technical obstacles won't annoy us during the project. You will get a reception report and a short test file from us. **** Please don't send MIDI-files to KIDLEADR or KIDFORUM. They tend to be rather long (about 30 KB) and would annoy anybody who can't read them. Step 1 (1st of March 94) The Oldenburg kids distribute the skeleton of the melody that serves as basis for our different interpretation of the song. Step 2 Every group if kids fill up the skeleton following their own liking and produce a fully intrumented (electronic) song. The results should be sent as midi files to Oldenburg until 15th of April. Step 3 (15th of April) The different songs are redistributed to every group. Other interested KIDLINKERs request the midi-files via e-mail (or Gopher if we can arrange it). Or they request the printed notes via FAX. Step 4 (until celebration days May 6,7 and 8 maybe this could start earlier) Kids write song-TEXTs in their own language Step 5 The comprehensive Song is presented at KIDLINK May celebration sites. (mixed electronic and hand-made music) Even if you won't participate, your comments (and midi test-files) are welcome.
