My role in this year celebration was like be in sight seeing, I tried to look around so I could tell forward what is going on in KIdlink during the year. I had a three girls group with in IRC chat on friday the 7th. It was their first time to telecommunicate by IRC. Girls are 15, 13 and 12 and they managed well with english language - as well as those young boys from Tarto, Estonia, who also were on line. There were also Patti Weegs class and some random communicators. My group was so enthusiastic that it was difficult to stop chatting. We participate the IRC chat here in my office at Continuing Education Centre. This winter has been very interesting in Kidlink, especially from Kidleadr list I've learned a lot. Thank you all! Vasa Ovningsskola is a training school for teachers of a special subject, and has internet access because it belongs to Abo Akademy University. It became a little panicky, because I compiled the ircII client program the evening before the celebration, and the next day I was going to a conference in Sweden. But I was so fascinated when I had my first irc- session, that I wanted the kids to take part anyway. Some of them had got their user accounts just a few days before, and didn't know so much about Unix and even less about irc. But I sent an e-mail to them and explained how to start the client program, and crossed my fingeres as I went to Sweden. But it all turned out great! Here is what they write: ------------ Hello! My name is Markus Granlund. I am 14 years old, and I live in Vasa, Finland. At our school we were four students who participated in the KidLink Festival. We had some problems in the beginning in getting contact, because we were beginners in Unix. After a couple of hours trying to figure out a way to join, a guy on IRC told us to use telnet for logging in, and so we did. When we first joined I tried to talk to some kids on #kidlink, but then I met a guy from US that wanted to talk to me, so we joined #kidlink2. At #kidlink2 we were a couple of people talking about really interesting things. We discussed some politics, wheather, etc. We did not exchange any e-mail addresses, because we had not had so much time to think of what to do on the Celebration. I think that the arrangements of the Festival worked well, but I did not do anything else than talk. I think that we were not well preparated so therefore we could not participate in all the interesting things going on during the festival. The Celebration was my first contact with KidLink, and I really got a good impression of KidLink. I am really looking forward to join in KidLink in the future. Thank You for a Really Interesting Evening! e-mail: magranlu@bilbo.abo.fi ------------ Im Antti Luoma (14) from Vaasa, Finland... I and three of my friends joined the kidlink celebration festival in May 7th. First we went to IRC, and joined the #kidlink channel. Then somebody told us to call 192.88.240.244... We didn't know that we could use the SERVER so we used the command TELNET instead... We discovered that there were several festival channels... We joined the first channel and found out that it was veryveryvery fast... We got contact to other children, but you could'nt conversate because it was so fast... The best channel in my opinion was the second one. It was'nt too fast and not too slow. There we got contact and could talk to others in a normal way. The third channel was too slow.... After all the festval was great fun and I'll think everyone injoyed it. Antti Luoma e-mail: aluoma@bilbo.abo.fi ______________________________________________________________________________ P.S. Makogonov <1421@as.khabarovsk.su> Subject: Report from Russia Dear KIDLINKERS, I'm a local Kidlink representative from Khabarovsk, the Far East of Russia. We started our communications for students in October 1992. They communicated throw my E-mail office in Russian Academy of Sciences. We have E-mail connection to Internet throw Relcom: UUCP network spreading widely in x-USSR. Now I have two schools communicating with their friends in Ohio (St. Julie School, Jean Stringer) and Florida (Hardee Junior High School, Willis Henderson). We also took part in Kidlink Celebration. Still we have no on-line connection to Internet. Willis and his students made a voice phone call. It was a hard task to co-ordinate all the events in time and space. It was 7 p.m of 6 May in Florida and 11 a.m. of 7 May in Khabarovsk. We gathered togather in the Liceum here, 11 students of age 11-14 from the two schools, three teachers (Victoria Polozova, director of the Liceum, Tatiana Silina and Irene Ivanova, teachers of English). Willis had four students and one teachers there. When a call came, almost every student could talk for a couple of minutes to say "hello" to his pen-friend. It was excited! I feel real holiday spirit that it works! Victoria made video record of the chat. I showed Kidshow slides at school computer. Our the very first year of Kidlink communications has got a nice termination. Sincerely, Sergei V.
