USA - Columbia South Carolina ----------------------------- Date: 16 May 1993 08:39:13 -0400 (EDT) From: Neal Helman Subject: Hammond School's Telebration Experience I would consider Hammond School's participation in the KIDS-93 Telebration to be a success. While it consisted solely of IRC conversations, despite our plans for fax & Ham Radio talk, a considerable number of kids made some interesting contacts. Unfortunately, we did not have press coverage of the event, nor were we able to make our own video record. Throughout the day Thursday and Friday, at least one student was online. We at least checked the IRC activity once during every class. Lunch and break were spent with a crowd around the IRC computer. Indeed, quite a few students got a chance to talk. Michael Allen, a seventh grader who has been learning much about Gopher, MUDs, and now IRC this year, got permission to spend all of Thursday and most of Friday online. He tried arranging a Latin- speaking channel and a few debates, but to no avail. He did have some interesting insights that he will post sometime in the near future. On Friday afternoon, John Jenkins and Ashley Crowe, two eighth graders, had an extended conversation with students in Connecticut. Apparently substantial snail- mail penpal relationships have sprung up from the IRC chats. John says "talking on the computer makes me want to type faster," something that has been a problem for him for some time now. Maggie Collier, an eighth grader active in community theater, began a conversation with a peer who has Broadway experience. Maggie may work on a project with her next year. On Saturday, Gini Allen made an acquaintance from New Zealand who will be able to teach her more about Internet computing than I probably can. She is maintaining that and other e-mail relationships through a commercial online service. Later that day, Trey Helms, a sixth grader who hopes to study computer engineering(!), had a conversation with several people at once, turned to me, and said, "This will really help me learn how to network computers together." -------- Neal Helman Hammond School Columbia, SC, USA n230163@univscvm.csd.scarolina.edu -- end SITEK931 --
