Kittredge Magnet School is a public school in DeKalb County, Georgia, emphasizing math, technology, and foreign languages. Subject Area of Expertise or Interests: I am library systems manager for Emory University. I am trying to find ways to motivate Kittredge administration to commit to this project for the coming academic year. Minimizing costs is one objective. IBM is a sponsor for Kittredge, so we have some hopes for picking up some assistance from them, but any ideas would be most welcome. Of particular concern is how the school can best connect, and how to integrate KIDLINK project activities into the curriculum on short notice. One of the best things I can say about Kittredge is that it is a young school, and still very willing to experiment -- a quality I have found lacking in most public schools in this country. Other Equipment Available for Communicating: Emory is on BITNET and Internet, and my daughter has subscribed to KIDCAFE using my VM ID. I teach Internet and E-mail (among other activities) and can learn to use almost anything if necessary. Kittredge currently has some modems and plenty of PC's, but no direct connections to cyberspace. I can tolerate KIDCAFE traffic during the summer because activity is low, but come next year, I've got to get her off my ID, as the expected volume of traffic would probably swamp me at work. ========================================================================= Name: Irene Anne Eckstrand 91/8 Country: Bethesda, MD USA E-mail: iae@cu.nih.gov School: National Institutes of Health Age of Students: elementary Subject Area of Expertise or Interests: Science education for elementary schools. Allen, envisioned an approach to achieving peaceful solutions to worldwide problems. Dr. Allen firmly believed that people must learn to feel and think in new ways and the education for change should start before adolescence and continue into adulthood. According to Dr. Allen: "Peace is possible only as individuals and groups learn to live amicably with one another as friends." Children's International Summer Villages (CISV) is an international organization working to promote friendship and understanding among children, young people, and adults in all parts of the world. Since its conception in 1946 and the first Village in 1951, it has grown to include program participants from 92 nations, learning to live and work together in peace and friendship. CISV's initial focus is on eleven year children who gather from up to 12 countries for a month of living internationally at sites all over the world. Delegations from each country are made up of 2 boys and 2 girls and their adult leader. Programs for older children set up Interchanges between delegations that visit the homes of delegates from another country and then exchange the experience. Older children may also act as Junior Counselors at CISV Villages or attend Seminar Camps where the concentration is on finding alternatives to violence as a means of conflict resolution. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Dear Kidlink People, I've included the above as an introduction (sketchy though it is), in the hope that you might take an interest in CISV and ask me to send you more information. I presently have two 9-12 year old groups, and two primary groups interested in regional, national or international communications on any topic. This year I wish to facilitate a KIDS-92, Kidsnet forum for each school site. Secondly I am a teacher of 8-10 year old Gifted computer class. We are currently seeking to engage in joint projects within the global classroom utilizing HYPERMEDIA technologies; ie, mac, cd/rom, audio/visual research and productions. I would like to begin with a mutual dialogue about the Kidlink global visions, followed by 3 or 4 simple study topics, mutually accessible and experiential. These could be topics across the strands of study; ie. science, folk culture, contemporary culture, history, environmental studies. (Who is interested in a joint study of ant farms? Bacteria cultures?, Children's games culture, etc.?) Any simple project which could be synthesized by two or more groups via modem/fax or direct mail would be a starting point for beginning hypermedia scripting/programming and integrated learning. Compatible computer systems would be a necessary requirement for this link. I will be working with my county office of technology in the organization and dissemination of this project outcomes. Any interested persons please contact me by November 1. Thirdly, I facilitate the "fishtalk" conference on ECONET. Several teachers along the California coast have organized this conference to dialogue primarily about SALMONID IN THE CLASSROOM projects, where children are incubating Trout and Salmon eggs, studying stream and habitat issues and integrated science learning. Any teacher interested in this project may contact us at the ECONET internet address. I am one of them, as I am now writing my Ph. D. dissertation in instructional technology, and hope to be able to graduate in December, 1992 or May, 1993. We plan to use KIDLINK a great deal! We will check mail every morning, and respond immediately. Our kids like results, and we will give them to you, and hope that you can do the same. Kirk 91/6 Address: John Jay Middle School Rte. 121 Katonah, New York USA 10536 914-763-9431 school 203-744-2182 home E-mail: cdp!pkirk@labrea.Stanford.EDU To introduce myself as Peter F. Kirk to strangers sometimes is a painful thing to do. Reading faces is sometimes rewarding and sometimes no so. In this case reading a screen can, in it self, be a very critical act, so bear w/me as I bear my soul to you all. I started with telecommunications many years ago as a selfish act. I was tired of running to the local library for my 4 kids, so I invested in Comp-u-serve and their electronic encyclopedia. I found it so rewarding, I brought it to my classroom and paid the expense with plastic money. The idea caught on in the District of Katonah-Lewisboro New York U.S.A., so we now have a budget account for our 4 primary and 2 secondary division schools for this type of activity. Since that time in 1986 we have branched into Dialog Databases and CD-Roms. I have been involved AT&T's Long Distance Learning for the past 4 sessions (2yrs) as a participant and a Circle Leader of 9 schools. National Geographic's KidsNet did not escape my clutches either for a year and a half. Before PeaceNet, I was involved with the "Star School Project" run by the Technical Education Research Center in Cambridge Mass. (TERC for short). My science classes were collecting Weather and Radon data to be shared with 12 other schools across the U.S. as well as building and testing physics problems. The problems were then written up and data supplied. This was put together so other schools could duplicate what we had done and see it we had any areas of discussion. In September of '90, I joined the PeaceNet family and was put in the mideast.iearn conference. We had daily contact during the MidEast War with Tel Aviv and Haifa through a fellow named Gideon Goldstein. That was a very frightening experience. So far away, but the feelings of war, so close. With the end of the war, I found kids-91 through a friend. I quickly found kids-91 to be a very active and purposeful conference. On May 12th '91 (Mother's Day) our team of five students, between the hours of 1pm to 5pm made contacts from Norway to Hawaii to New Zealand and 8 other schools in the U.S. This was done with 4 IBM "AT's" and two video phones and a fax. We were very lucky to have made so many contacts and the equipment available. Our students are trained on PC jrs in a IBM Lab with 14 stations and have "fun" (no games) in an Apple Lab of 27 stations. I teach Telecommunications, Q&A, Lotus, Apple Works, Professional Write, Logo and Robotics to students and teachers alike, but not in the order. But more importantly, I pick up the phone when I'm in trouble with a program. So I have lots of numbers! Thanks for listening. ========================================================================= Name: Bosse Klykken 91/8 Country: Eydehavn, Norway E-mail: InterNet: klykken@atik.no School: Moland Comprehensive School Plans for using Kidslink: Making the world a better place to live in. And I would like to know who you are. If you do not feel annoyed send me back your letter, please. Here is my rough self-introduction. I'm a Japanese prof. aged 60. at Kansai Gaidai College at Hirakata, Osaka_fu, Japan for the past 11 years with the background of 27 years of high school English teacher. Now I mainly teach Mass Communication, where I use, as a vehicle, BSN (Bloomsburg & Shikaraki Networking BBS: Tel:717-387-5000) in Bloombsurg PA. I will refer to it later. I am a graduate of Kyoto University, majoring pedagogy. While young I missed the chance to study in its graduate course partly because I could not afford to stay on campus short of money those days, partly because I found my majoy of little interest. Thus I have lived my life as a simple teacher of English and social studies, and not a scholar. ( I think I will be the same way in future.) It seems I have a talent of actually more interest in a practice side of the matter than the theoletical side. In relation to the pursuit of intercultural communciation I'm in touch with, I am studying now 'Diffusion of Innovations' advocated by Dr. E.M. Rogers at South California Univarsity. I met him at his office two yeara ago. As for BSN, the host was set up when I presented a set of host machines to TOWN HALL in 1990. Since then I have been accessing once or twice every day together with my collegues outside campus. Thus I have got friends and acquaintances in University of Bloomsburg and around town. I am planning to vist Bloomsburg this September for the third time from 6th to 14th. My main purpose of visitng the States this year is: 1) to have the 2nd Japan Night in Bloomsburg, gathering BSN active users with sponsorship of TOWN 2) to visit local schools' classes introducing students something about Japan 3) to have the 2nd meeting with school board education to discuss the curriculum for a telecommunications course. 4) to visit Prof Blackstone and her colleagues at Slippery Rock University in PA to show my idea aiming at communicatons linkage between students. (Dr. Blackstone was a visiting professor of my university for the 1st semester of this year. She understands me well and is giving me useful pieces of advice on launch of my project.) 5) to find out some universities (out of 14 state univerisrites) where the Japanese Language or Japalology is taught - seeking for partners of exchanging ideas, thought, information, via telecommunications or FAX, if possible, composing a project team between us. Oh, I visited the States in 1972, 1976, 1987, joining the summer courses (40 days) at Frodam Univeristy, NYC, Texas University at Austin, and Colorado University a Bolder specially arranged for junior/senior high English teachers of 40, each time as the group leader each time. As for family, I have a wife Sumie(49), daughters Akiko(23), Noriko(21). Akiko is in the 5th year of Shiga (National) Medical school. Noriko is in the 2th year at dental school of Hiroshima (National) University. Akiko is a manager of the boat club. Noriko belongs to the tennis Club. Akiko has been to Australia twice before and they both are planning to travel in New Zealand early next year. My wife stays home, which she seems not to be fond of, though. I may have been too lengthy but I just tried to tell you what I am as I am very interested in communicating with you. ======================================================================== Name: Shliomovich Boris City, Country: Moscow, Russia E-mail Address: boshli@child.msk.su School: no, my pupils study at the computer club Club address: Rojdestvensky blv.,21 Moscow, RUSSIA Age of Students: from 7 to 16 (they are mixed in my groups) Plans for using Kidlink: to teach young programmers to work togather (so it will show them how to live togather and to keep the peace) Subject Area of Expertise or Interests: games for training and maintain knowleges ========================================================================= Name: Jeanne Sink 91/11 City, Country: Charleston, S.C. My classes have usually adopted either manatees or whales. 2. Space - Each year, our total school population enjoys several weeks of study that we call "Space Weeks". All grades view age appropriate videos and participate in activities. I sponsor a "Science Club" for 4th and 5th graders that was started because of the interest and concern of my students following the Challenger launch. 3. Goal: increase world geography knowledge for my students and allow them the opportunity to exchange ideas with other students and adults with different backgrounds. -------------------==> End Kidlink People File <==-----------------------
