Although children sometimes begin pre-school as early as 2 yrs of age,
formal public (state run) schooling generally begins with Kindergarten
at age 5 yrs.  The numbered grades 1-12 are broken into three segments:
Elementary, Middle or Junior High School and High School or Upper School.
The grade-age equivalents are roughly:
        Grade                   Age
        1                       6
        2                       7
        3                       8
        4                       9
        5                       10
        6                       11
        7                       12
        8                       13
        9                       14
        10                      15
        11                      16
        12                      17
Students generally graduate from High School at 17 or 18 yrs. of age and
then enter college.  It is not unusual, however, for some students to
complete High School in their 16th year.
