TEACHER: Noelle Saville Videoconference: According to our Bell Canada contact, we can't link with the European sites at all. There is no way for them to dial up the bridge unless it is located in the US. This is because they have gone with the PictureTel technology. If there is any site in the US that IS linking up with Europe, that would be very interesting! As it stands, we will have our own Canadian videoconf on the 22nd, with Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa, and we hope, North Island College in B.C. We have made arrangements with York University for the IRC CHAT event. They have 100 phone lines available and we are working things out so that there will be an automatic connection to the relay for our users here. We will probably also have a small CHAT on SciLink for SciLinkers who want to have some local fun - and link with those who don't make it onto Internet. We are working to get an Internet setup for Ian in British Columbia as well and we should know about that soon. Ian can be reached in B.C. for email at and Noelle is if you want to email them directly. The technical coordinator in B.C. is John Nicklin, email is and he is helping to coordinate the CHAT and the videoconf link. =========================================================================== Denmark - Copenhagen -------------------- Contact: Pre-Event Coordinating Addressing Info: Claus Berg Tel Voice: (+45) 44 98 14 28 Vaerebrovej 52,7.1 Internet: Claus_Berg@skole-kom.uni-c.dk DK-2880 Bagsvaerd Denmark Plans: ------ 1. Site Name or Description: "Eksperimentarium", Tuborg Havnevej 7, DK-2900 Hellerup, Denmark. Tel Voice: (+45) 39 27 33 33 The new Danish 'Eksperimentarium' in Copenhagen, which is our first public science-center (opened in 1991) have generous opened its doors - and will be the main KIDLINK-site in our country. The goal is of course to celebrate the birthday of KIDLINK, by activities, which could increase the Danish engagement in the project. We follow the common outlines by inviting as many kids as possible to answer and discuss the 4 questions. But at the same time we want to involve some of the children in simple science- activities - about 'physics', 'chemistry' and 'nature'. Not as school subjects, but as activating, funny, worth-while experiences within these fields seen in a broad perspective. 2. Computers at site: * 16 IBM PS-1 PRO computers, 8 modems, 2 laserprinters. * approx. 8 + 7 mac lc, 2 laserprinteres og 1 colorprinter, 3 modems for network. * 2 monitors with 33" and 28" vga screens * Communicationsprograms (BettyKom and MacKom) with a shell to the conferencesystem PortaCom, and a upgrade of PortaCom from 5 to 18 contemporary users. * 17 computer-dictionaries in English-Danish and Danish- English. 3. Number of telephone lines, numbers for them, and intended use: * 16 telephone lines linked to KTAS' local area and 1 international line (to fax). Free use of the lines. We use these lines to connect to our PortaCOM-system, "SkoleKOM". 4. Preferred E-Mail addresses: We have set up local conferences in "SkoleKOM", which gives all the participating kids the possibilities of sharing incoming messages. Unless other address is given in personal email, please use this InterNET-address: Happy_Birthday@skole-kom.uni-c.dk The adults can be reached at their own conference: Eksperimentarium@skole-kom.uni-c.dk or using personal email to the Danish KIDLINK Coordinator: Claus_Berg@skole-kom.uni-c.dk or to Steen Weidemann at the "Schooll's Database Service": Steen_Weidemann@skole-kom.uni-c.dk (responsible for chats!) 5. Number and ages of kids you are planning for: As really involved participants we've invited 90 kids from 3 schools: Marbaekskolen, Skibby 7'th graders Buddinge Skole, Soeborg, Gladsaxe 4'th, 7'th and 8'th gr. NGG, Nordsjaellands Grundskole og Gymnasium 7'th graders They will also show KIDLINK to all visiting kids during the days of Celebration. 11. Chat participation intentions: We have telnet-capability, but will like to chat like this... On the celebrations days the Danish kids will have the opportunity to chat directly from the UNIX-computer owned by "The School's Database Service", (The Ministry of Education). Not to confuse our kids, (due to their age a lot of them still have a hard job to handle the English language) we would like to arrange the chats, to be chats between two persons, and not a forum. The easiest way to handle this is to make a time schedule for the chats. We will therefore be greatfull if you will send us a mail, informing us about the time for the chat (in GMT-time), and if you have the opportunity, also the theme your kids would like to discuss. How to chat on our UNIX-computer: -------------------------------- 1. Telnet to 129.142.6.88 (or g-way.niem.dk) 2. Login: kidlink (REMEMBER lower-case) 3. Password: kidtalk (REMEMBER lower-case) 4. When you are standing on the promt g-way.niem.dk write: talk kidlink and wait for a response. 5. If you are called yourself, response with: talk kidlink, and the chat can begin. 13. Miscellaneous: The Danish Minister of Education, Bertel Haarder, will visit us Monday, May 18. He will give the official Opening Speech at 2.30 p.m - and will be participating in a Press Conference together with the KIDLINK Organizers and representatives from the "Eksperimentarium" We have prepared a presskit and printed a local issue of the KIDS-92 Newsletter #5. Some teachers (graduate students) from the Royal Danish School of Education will make a videotape about the event. 15. Other information: This way, we hope to bring into focus as well KIDLINK, as the developments in science-education. We're happy to say, that we have only been met with positive answers to our requests for sponsored hardware, software, etc. We have decided to split up our arrangement in two parallel sequences.... A. Public 'DataBar' - where visiting kids can introduce themselves and read responses from other participants B. Workshops - 3 school-classes/groups of students are invited to spend these two days at the Danish Eksperimentarium. They will be doing 'low technology science-experiments' and will be describing their expiriences - both to: * the audience/other visitors * the press * and in e-mail to other KIDLINK-sites These children will have some previous expirience with KIDLINK, and will also be introducing our project in 'Public DataBar'. We hope, that other sites, would like to cooperate with us about these efforts - especially we have in mind, that if one or two other sites were situated at local, national science-centers, Childrens Museum's, etc. - we might be able to a global 'exchange of science-experiments' during the two Celebration days. Anyone interested can request a list of our "science-activities", sending a message to Claus_Berg@skole-kom.uni-c.dk ============================================================================ Estonia - Tartu --------------- Contact: Tarmo Ainsaar Internet: ta@htg.tartu.ew.su Hugo Treffner Grammar School Tartu, Estonia The satellite station is set up in Tartu, to give us the possibility to use 'ftp', 'telnet' etc. This equipment is working now in one scientific institude. This class reflects a school vision which is focused on establishing international curriculum standards. We have initiated an International Mathematics Project which allows our students to exchange mathematics from around the world. Some of our students have been sharing this information and/or math problems with their penpals as part of their cultural information exchanges. Since people are connected to many different systems, it will be impossible to have EVERY site chatting on the same system, but there are several options which should allow the most people the best access to the chats which, while held at the same time, will not be directly interconnected. Here is a brief overview of systems which should be available and a brief description of what is needed (besides a computer and a modem): 1. Internet Relay Chat (IRC): This is the most widely available and has the best potential to interconnect the most sites. We have established our own IRC Server which is up and running for testing any time and will be officially open on May 18 at 0001 GMT. If we get overcrowded on IRC, we can spill into the global IRC on our own #KidLink channels. You Need: An account on a mainframe computer which allows you TELNET access. If you have this, there are a few programs which we can tell you how to get which will make IRC more versatile for you, but these programs are not *absolutely* necessary to get you connected. All you really need is TELNET. Sites in the UK ***CAN!*** connect through a JANET relay. Help Files: GET KIDS-92 CHATIRCK for a Step by Step Instruction of how to TELNET to and get on the KidLink IRC Server. Many of the commands in KIDS-92 CHATIRC (note missing the 'K') will apply to the KidLink IRC Server, so you should keep or get that file. 2. BITNET Relay Chat: This is accessible primarily by users who have accounts on higher-education-related systems (universities, etc). Many people with BITNET access are not aware of this wonderful capability to chat globally. There are some systemic limitations to this system not present with IRC and they include limits on the number of people which can be on the relay "server" as well as sometimes limited operating hours of the servers. You Need: An account on a mainframe which at least has the option of a BITNET address for you. If you can do a "BITNET SEND" (i.e. SEND HUNNIBEL@YALEVMS Yes! I am interested!), you can do BITNET Relay. No program is needed to do this, just some information about registration. Help Files: GET KIDS-92 CHATBIT for a detailed description of the commands/procedures. Also includes tips on how it will be used for KIDS-92. 3. Deleted. 4. Deleted. 5. Deleted. 6. Deleted. 7. BBS/Local Network Chats: Several BBS/Local Networks involved with Kids-92 have live chat capability. The sites with this capability will have the information included in their site information along with access procedures. You Need: Willingness to make long distance phone calls. $$ 7a. TWICS in Tokyo has agreed to open their TALK utility on their system. The instructions are below. You Will Need: $$ (for phone calls) 8. Site-to-Site Chats: Some sites may coordinate a short term site-to-site chat on a topic or just to make sure contact is made with a particluar site. We were trying to coordinate such a link with Protvino but it appears the technical and financial aspects are too overwhelming. Other sites may be more appropriate. You Need: Coordination and willingness to make long distance phone calls. 9. Semi-sync over KidCafe: This is not genuine chatting but may be the only option for some people and is certainly a good way to make general announcements to everyone involved. The delays in your message reaching the other parties can be extensive during the day but can also be as fast as one minute. The benefit of using KidCafe is that messages can be longer and have better composition. This is ideal for impromptu questionnaires. You Need: To be subscribed to KIDCAFE. Here are some suggestions from Dan Wheeler to help make "semi-sync" on KIDCAFE, RESPONSE, and KIDS-ACT work smoothly: a. We will be following the same general guidelines for these lists. Answers to the four KIDLINK questions should be sent to RESPONSE. Kids can write about anything in KIDCAFE. KIDS-ACT is for kids to write about how they can achieve their visions of the future. b. AGE LIMITS: Adults are not allowed to send messages to these lists. Participation in KIDS-92 has been limited to kids between the ages of 10 and 15. We especially welcome messages during the Celebration from the participants who have turned 16 during the year. This is the last chance for you to say goodbye to all your KIDS-92 friends. c.TRAFFIC: The KIDCAFE list will certainly have a flood of messages during the Celebration. I expect mail to be slower than usual so be patient. I also expect many sites to be unable to keep up with reading the incoming mail, so messages may not be read until after the Celebration is over. Thus do not count on getting answers from mail to individuals. d. USE SUBJECT: LINE FOR ADDRESS: It is absolutely necessary to use the Subject: line of the messages to indicate who the message is for. e. LONGER MESSAGES: I think it would help to encourage kids to write longer messages to groups of kids at other sites rather than to individuals. For instance, a kid here in Cincinnati could write one message to "Friends in Knarvik" rather than messages to four individual kids in Knarvik. f. REFLECTIONS: It is also appropriate for kids to send in messages reflecting on their experiences with the KIDS-92 project. These don't need to be addressed to specific people. g. IN CASE OF TROUBLE: I (Dan Wheeler) expect to be online most of the time during the Celebration. Send trouble reports directly to me and I'll try to help. Harold Miller in Hawaii adds his two cents worth on "semi-sync:" h. TOPICS: If at all possible, try to use the subject line to describe WHAT you are talking about, rather than direct it to a particular site. That way, everyone will feel welcome to respond. Last year, I recall kids at some sites feeling left out. i. FEELING LEFT OUT: If you do feel left out, read the messages anyway (even if the title line says it is for a particular school)..chances are, some of the messages will contain interesting items you can comment on and reply to. j. DIRECT E-MAIL: If you really DO need to send email to a particular site, then DON'T POST it on KIDCAFE. k. BIGDAYS ONLY: Of course, these comments only apply to two Celebration Days! 10. While it is not really a computer chat, several sites are organizing a compressed videoconference. Most has been coordinated at this time but if you would like information, you GET KIDS-92 VIDEOCON or write Unni de Presno at Upresno@oscar.bbb.no. --------------------- TWICS TALK Procedures --------------------- TWICS will provide a free username to make use of the TALK real-time chat facility on our host computer in Tokyo for those KIDS-92 participants who want to come over. You are responsible for your own access costs, either through direct modem dial or through some arrangement you might have with TYMNET or another public (X.25) data network. TYMNET: 4406 20000524 TYMPAS: (NISJPN) 524 DDX-P: 4401 3612065 modem: +81-3-3351-8244 +81-3-3351-7905 After you get connected, please press a few times to get the login prompt, and then... Connected to TWICS(Tokyo) Username: TALK Password: KIDS92 This will take you directly into the TALK real-time chat facility. Enter your name at the prompt, and then enter the command /JOIN KIDS92 to enter a TALK conference for this purpose. Enter the command /HELP for the online help files for using the TALK facility. --end of TWICS TALK Procedures-- ============================================================================ ===================== GLOBAL CHAT TIME GRID ===================== The following chart can be used to determine how well the interaction between the sites will work out. For space reasons, each site has been reduced to a four letter identifier. The full name of these sites is at the bottom of each page. Each recipient of this file will probably have to physically cut and paste the pages to make a complete grid showing all sites. Sites are shown as operating from their stated start-up time and their stated shut-down time. This makes it appear that they are in operation for an extra half hour, but I couldn't think of a better way, so read care- fully and if you have any questions, refer to the actual site data provided by the site. +----------+----+----+----+----+----+----+----+----+----+----+----+----+----+--- -+----+----+----+----+----+----+----+----+----+----+----+----+----+----+----+--
