(MarkH) I got a note from Sally though... I think she may make it! (DanW) good. Others will probably arrive later, too (MarkH) well... this is one of the problems I guess... we just have to wait (MarkH) I got approval to go to China (time away from work) in November for that conference (DanW) Great!!!! (MarkH) I am on the phone now trying to make the arrangements firm with my company (DanW) I'm envious. My fall trip is to Baltimore. (MarkH) on hold (MarkH) If it works out... I will get about three weeks... (MarkH) I am... hang on (DanW) And I just found out the University cannot afford to fly us to Baltimore--so we are taking a van. (DanW) ok. I'll wait. (MarkH) road trip (DanW) yes. ten hours each way. (MarkH) how many of you *** Change: mikeb has joined this Channel (#kidlink) (MarkH) (phone call over) (mikeb) hello from the uk (MarkH) hi mike! (DanW) Hi Mikeb (mikeb) hey fellas /whois mikeb *** mikeb is xuegxac@clover.csv.warwick.ac.uk (Mike Burleigh) *** mikeb is on channels #KidLink *** On IRC via server stork.doc.ic.ac.uk (Department of Computing, Imperial College, London ) (DanW) I'm glad you made it! *** Change: rokelly has joined this Channel (#KIDLINK) (mikeb) anyone else here yet? (MarkH) as you speak mike (DanW) Hello Bob (rokelly) Bob Kelly, here Mike, Dan, and Mark! (MarkH) I suspect Claus may make it... I gave hime some good poop on a client server he can telnet to (mikeb) hey Robert (MarkH) hi Bob (MarkH) I have a question since we seem to have a few people here... (mikeb) have you guys read my latest KIDPROJ project ? (rokelly) Hi Mike, being a Brit, you may appreciate the fact that the rock group U2 is doing an outdoor show at our football stadium tonight, right at the end of my street 1/2 block away from a million watt speaker system!!@@ (mikeb) soory Mark go ahead (mikeb) hey they are my son's fav group (MarkH) do you think is it necessary (or needed) to maintain ALL the logs in the archives (of the IRC chats) or just the most recent ones (rokelly) yeah, go ahead Mark, this can wait (DanW) Mike> Yes, I read about the project (MarkH) Mike> Haven't subscribed to the list (mikeb) go on mark...we''ll pick up on my ideas later (DanW) A million watt won't wait! (rokelly) So far I'm not sure much of our verbage has interest of archival value, although that will undoubtedly change (MarkH) I saw the thing you posted to KIDPLAN (I think it was that) with a few project ideas (mikeb) I agree if it's in your ear ! ;-) (mikeb) nope Mark I refer to a project inviting kids to write to a magazine (mikeb) the magazine is run by a charity (MarkH) oh... this is something maybe we need to discuss... (rokelly) I'd like to know more about it also. (DanW) Mike> I read your announcement quickly and filed it for later, so I'm hazy on the details, but it sounded good (MarkH) by not posting the "what's new in KIDPROJ" to the KIDLINK or KIDLEADR list, we may be missing out on getting new participants (mikeb) my ideas as you may well know are that we should move across the network divides (mikeb) you are quite right Mark...remiss of me but time is short these days (mikeb) I will in future put up more reminders (MarkH) mike> "accross the network divides?" (DanW) Yes, Mark, I think that project *announcements* should go to KIDLINK (mikeb) YES :-) he said gleefully :-) (mikeb) ACROSS the divides (MarkH) I think Dan is right because KIDPROJ is, in effect, a series of smaller KID-9X projects (mikeb) from the Internet out into 'local radio' into printed magazines..onto packet radio ! (MarkH) i see (DanW) mike> and then (I hope) back from the packet world to the KIDLINK Internet world (mikeb) whilst you are talking about creating more kidlink areas I'm thinking that I would like to see a 'slimmed down kidlink that the developing countries could 'afford' to ship in perhaps even on packet radio. (MarkH) we apparently have an active shortwave club around here (Mary Esborn's husband is in it)... (MarkH) and I am going to explore that over the next 10 months. (mikeb) can you get her to set up a dialogue with peter daly here in the UK (rokelly) Mike, please tell me more about "packet radio." (MarkH) Mike> I see... and I agree... I think it would just be the coolest to send a laptop to very remote regions with all the radio gear for new contacts (mikeb) Packet radio is the answer for the developing countries where the costs involved in the use of phone lines are way out of sight (DanW) yes, mike, I see projects as one way of creating a "slimmed down" way of participating in KIDLINK. Thsi is very important (MarkH) mike> I will try.... many things on the burner right now (mikeb) the only way I can get my four Kenyan schools onto Kidlink is either through twinning with schools or with a very 'slimmed down service'. (MarkH) twinning? (DanW) bob> packet radio is a way for hams to send text messages. I ends up being somewhat like linked BBS systems. (Mike: correct me if I'm Wrong) (DanW) twinning==pairing Two schools send direct email. Every message the get is specifically for them. (mikeb) Peter Daly ships files as big as anything we handle with ftp and he is using packet radio...he isn't paying a cent! (mikeb) you are quite correct Dan. (DanW) My fingers don't seem to be doing very well tonight. I hope none of my typos have confused my meaning. (mikeb) Recently we had a Russia drop out of a distance learning course here in the UK because she could no longer afforn the on-line costs...now if she had been using packet radio and if the Open University had a BBS!!!!!! :-) (MarkH) how much does the radio gear cost? (MarkH) how portable is it? *** Change: MaryEz has joined this Channel (#kidlink) (DanW) Hi Mary! (MaryEz) Hi, how is everyone? (MarkH) Hi mary... we are talking about packet radio (ham) as a way to grow kidlink into new remote areas (rokelly) Hi Mary, Bob Kelly here from Ames, Iowa. (DanW) very fine thanks. (MaryEz) Mark, where is your welcome message? I missed it! (MarkH) well.. thought it was getting a little annoying (DanW) I don't mind the welcome message (MaryEz) Hi, Bob. Continue your talk I will be interested because my husband is a ham operator. (MaryEz) The message lets you know right away you are in the right place. (DanW) Mary> Does your husband do packet radio? (mikeb) Sorry fellas...my wife has just arrived in from an exhausting meeting so I must move myself and make her some supper....I have really enjoyed our short conference and look forward to next friday. (MaryEz) I don't know. (mikeb) bye.....:-) *** Signoff: mikeb (Leaving) (DanW) ok, Mike. bye *** AutoHi text is set to 'Welcome to the KidLink IRC' (rokelly) So long Mike, later...... (MaryEz) I will ask him later. (MarkH) well... ! (DanW) That was a quick exit. (MarkH) the welcome message has been added (MaryEz) I should say! (MarkH) yes dan... very quick... musta been something real important ;-) (rokelly) Mark, so the remote radio linked site uses radio in place of a phone line, and the rest works like a BBS connection? (MaryEz) Are others apt to join us? (MarkH) yes bob.. that's pretty much it (MarkH) Mary... I thought Sally Laughon was going to make it.... (rokelly) Sounds great, no one commented about how much it cost, anyone know? (DanW) Mary> this came up because mike has proposed a project that involves a magazine that then gets distributed via packet radio (MarkH) she sent me a note confirming the time and everything (MaryEz) Sounds interesting! (rokelly) Sally sent me a note also confirming 5 PM time for her. (MaryEz) My brother-in-law may know more about it. I will ask him about it. (DanW) Ham equipment is like computer equipment--costs vary. But figure about the same cost for a ham rig as a computer system (MaryEz) Maybe Sally fell asleep in her chair. I did! It was a tough day and it's Friday. You know the feeling!! (DanW) but for packet, you need both the radio equipment *and* the computer (MarkH) It would almost be kind of neat to buy a whole set up, write some really good instructions, and ship it off to timbuktu (MarkH) and let them start participating (rokelly) Mary, I think I have seem some of your messages before, where do you hang your educational hat? (MarkH) The problem is with radio licenses I am sure (MaryEz) Mark, that's big bucks. If the equipment my husband has is any indication. (DanW) I had a hard day--deconstructing an old workbench in my basement. (MarkH) yes mary... I figured that... but it's a dream anyway ;-) (MaryEz) I am in Guilford. I have Mark's kids in school. (rokelly) I had my first day of school this week being out with back problem, so kids were glad to *NOT* have a substitute today! (MaryEz) I live in Branford, CT the next town over. (DanW) Compared to the cost of a HOST computer (like venus) a ham rig is peanuts! (rokelly) Ah, so Mary and Mark, can have ptc via ftp (parent techer conf)! (MarkH) yeah dan... but I didn't *BUY* venus! ;-) (MaryEz) My understanding is that licensing is not as difficult as it used to be. Now that you (DanW) I wonder how much Thailand is paying for their connection-- probably thousands of dollars (MarkH) Mary... yes here in the US it may be easy... but how about Iraq? (DanW) yes, you don't need to learn Morse code! But that is only US (MaryEz) Oh, I see. We do tend to forget there are other people in the world, don't we! (MarkH) that would *not* be the first place I would send it... but you know what I mean (MaryEz) @:-) (DanW) The knowledge requirements for doing packet radio are very high-- you need to know both computers and radio. (DanW) but there are hams that are doing it *now* in lots of countries we would like to reach. (DanW) and there is a strong public service tradition in ham radio, so we may be able to find people willing to help (MaryEz) Mark, I don't know if you know this but there is a Shoreline Ham Radio club that might want to try something like this out. I'll find out the name of the president. He is from Guilford. (MarkH) I think the thing to do would be, like mike said, slim the project down for the technology and then put together a good documentation packakge so that the pack radio folks would fully understand it (MarkH) Mary... before you came on... I mentioned that and also that your husband was in it... ;-) (MaryEz) There are quite a few people from Guilford! (MarkH) great! (MarkH) it's my wife's birthday today... dinner in a few minutes (MaryEz) I'll let you guys finish your planning. Nice typing to you! Have a good weekend. (MarkH) take care mary... see you next week *** Signoff: MaryEz (Leaving) (rokelly) Bye Mary (rokelly) Mark/Dan: any contact with Rich Naylor or Delwynne this week? (DanW) we need to find someone who knows both ham radio (packet) and computer networks to help bridge the gap. Mike does this in uk (DanW) Mark> say Happy Birthday to your wife from all of us. (MarkH) bob... rich and delwynne have been making the Tuesday chats (rokelly) Ah, Tuesday same time? (MarkH) Monday night at 8pm EDT (DanW) Mark> and have a very good dinner (MarkH) it's tuesday for them (MarkH) thanks... Im not off quite yet (rokelly) OK, I may tune in on some Monday evening. (MarkH) it's goot 'cause Thailand is on as well (MarkH) good (rokelly) Who is a KIDLINK person in Thailand? (MarkH) I don;t know if they have sent in responses yet... Dan? (DanW) Mark> I wish I could have you join me here for lamb chops and wine (DanW) We have had several Thai adults (MarkH) we have a nice dinner and I have a nice cake... wish for wine but I have to fly tomoorrow (DanW) but no sign of any kids yet. (rokelly) Dan you have any archived IRC logs of your chat w/ Thailand folks? (MarkH) rob... you can get them from listserv (DanW) Bob> Mark has archived the IRC logs (MarkH) GET KIDLEADR CHAT03 (rokelly) OK thanks, will do this weekend. (MarkH) it's about 33K (MarkH) I will be starting up the clubs at school here in October and will be looking for some chats on Tuesday afternoons and friday afternoon (MarkH) for the kids (DanW) It is hard to fit chats in with school schedules around the world (DanW) what hours, Mark? (MarkH) yes... it worked out well on the friday one though, because it was Saturday AM in NZ and rich got up and chatted with kids over breakfast (MarkH) 2:30-3:45 Eastern (MarkH) pm that is (DanW) Good, that is early enough for europe (rokelly) I'll be making preps next week with the computer system in my classroom (Mac LC), and trying to get proper software up and running. As of now I cannot use the communications module of Microsoft WORKS for IRC as its VT-100 emulation is not good.. (rokelly) ....enough for use w/ IRC. I have to find some other kind of terminal software to use. (DanW) Bob> good luck. If you were using ms-dos I could recommend some programs but I don't know much about the mac (MarkH) maybe a comm program that's just a comm program... instead of works (rokelly) I read various tech msgs on some subscriptions I get, but there seems to be no single package that has it all together, and is tolerable to use. (MarkH) isn't works kind of a composite program? (DanW) I think Joan Winsor is a mac user, maybe she can recommend one. (MarkH) yeah... but Joan winsor doesn't need VT-100 for IRC either (rokelly) I am looking at White Knight, Microphone II, Eudora, and one other. (MarkH) what about SmartTerm? (rokelly) Yeah, WORKS is integrated word processing, data base, spreadsheet, graphic draw, and communictions. (DanW) Is Red Rider a possiblity (MarkH) It cam with a modem we bought for a mac but we didn't use it bacuse it didn't have kermit file transfer (MarkH) yeah... That's it! Mary Ez uses that from her home (Red Ryder) (rokelly) I will check around w/ Joan and see what she says. Maybe we should work with folks to develop minimum configuration list given two or three systems people are using. I can't be only one w/ this prob. (DanW) ask on the KIDLEADR list. (MarkH) a 'minimum confirguration list'? please explain (rokelly) Given Mac hardware, what type of terminal program, modem, etc....ditto for MS-DOS, etc. (MarkH) read (MarkH) oops (rokelly) Dan, I will post msg of KIDLEADR and see what folks say. (MarkH) I have to run now... (DanW) good. Joan will see it there also (MarkH) Dan... can you start a log and send me the rest? (DanW) me too, bye all (rokelly) Guys, my meter is up on this end, have a good weekend. Bye all... (MarkH) ok nix that then... good night all (DanW) bye bye quit Leaving *** Logfile closed at Fri Sep 11 17:57:53 1992
