Nikki asked Liz:

When you say you are from England you mean Great Britian right? Which state?

Liz replied:

Nikki,

The British Isles are made up of:

  • the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland
  • the Republic of Ireland
both of these are sovereign nations, just like the USA.

The United Kingdom is made up of:
  • England
  • Wales
  • Scotland
  • Northern Ireland.
In these countries (states) things are changing very fast. We are all one nation and we all have the same passports, but Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have their own legislature. They also share a legislature called the British Government. England does not yet have it's own legislature, so we just have the British Government. In the old days people used to say England when they meant any or all of these places but that's not accurate, as England is just one part of the whole.

Northern Ireland just got its own legislature last week. They have had to work out a lot of problems and we are all pleased and proud it has all worked out for them. They had some help from an American Senator called George Mitchell. He was just great and I think our Queen will probably make him a knight. By the way, our Queen is the Queen of the United Kingdom but not the Republic of Ireland. She's also queen of a lot of other places like Australia and Canada

It's a bit confusing, isn't it?

My family is English with a little bit of Welsh and we live in the part of these islands that is called England, so that's where I'm from. I live in a city called Bristol, it used to be a great port. It's in the South West of England and you can find it easily in the atlas.

Does that answer your question?
