Aloha from Makaha Elementary School Enrichment Class

We are very lucky! We have a farm at our school. It is called Hoa `aina `o Makaha, which means "The land shared with friendship at Makaha." There is so much to see and do at our farm. Many boys and girls from other schools come to visit and learn here. We welcome you to come and visit us.

You may visit us at our school web site. It is:

Aloha from Makaha Elementary School in Hawaii:

(Ayabe & Ford)

Our students returned this week from their fall school break . They would like to let you know more about the farm at our school. We hope that you have visited our web site to see the pictures of our farm.

The web site address is: http://www.k12.hi.us/~makaha

The students each chose a topic about the farm. Here is Chapter 1.

The Gazebo

The gazebo is where Kumu Kiaha teaches us Hawaiian and helps us understand what it means. Sometimes it is for when it rains so you can go under. He works hard so he can teach us. I like to go there because it is cool. The color is brown.

The Hale

The farm hale (house) was built by a lot of people. Some people took a lot of their time off just to build it. We raised a lot of money to build it. Actually we raised a lot of pennies at our farm open house. It will be opened pretty soon. This week Friday is the blessing of the farm hale.

by Pai

The Herb Garden

On the farm there is a herb garden. When you go inside you will find some herbs and when you are pulling weeds you can tell by the smell. If you smell a weed it has no smell. If you grab a herb you know it is a herb. There are lots of things to do in the herb garden. Have fun!

The Carpentry Shop

Our carpentry shop is a part of our school farm. The carpentry shop is a room where sixth graders make wood shelves, cubbie holes, or things we might need in our classes. They also make their own creations. There is alot to do and it's really fun too!

by Toni

Square Gardens

Our square gardens at the farm are really neat because our fifth graders plant alot of different plants. They do alot of fun things with the plants.

We hope you enjoyed this chapter about our school farm. Check the mail for the next chapter.

Aloha Samuel, Pai, Sarah and Toni (are there 2 Tonis or did you write two topics?)

Thank you for telling us about the farm at your school. It sounds like a wonderful place. We looked at the website and saw the pictures too. Mmmm.... it looks really sunny and warm in Hawaii. It's Autumn here in England and there was frost on my car this morning. Brrrr!

Samuel, can you tell us what a gazebo is? I'm not sure we have them in some other countries. Maybe it's too cold here!

Pai, would you like to write again and tell us about blessing the hale? Is the hale like a normal house with stairs and windows and things? What is it made of? Why do you bless it?

Sarah, what herbs do you grow? We grow rosemary, thyme, mint and sage in our garden. We grow basil inside the house because it's too cold outside.

Toni, would you like to be a carpenter when you're older? It sounds like fun to make all those useful things!

best wishes,

Fish Tanks

The fish tanks are very dirty. They have all kinds of fish like tropical fish, goldfish, and tadpoles. Sometimes we get to go close to the fish tanks and look at the fish. One time when my friend looked too close, she almost fell in!!

The Animals

On the farm we have lots of animals. Some of them are goats, birds and fish. Our animals are very healthy. Some of the animals are small, big, huge and tiny. Some are furry animals, skinny animals and fat animals. The animal in our farm that we have more of are the fishes. Our most beautiful animal is our peacock. Our parrot is the best animal in the farm to me because it can talk and it has the two best colors I like--blue and red. All of our animals are very great and fun.

It is very fun watching the baby chicks run around. Our sheep and goats don't really do anything but they can eat a lot of food. It's not true that goats eat tin cans because I've never seen them do it.

All About Bees

At our farm we have lots of bees. There are three types of bees: queen, worker, and the drone. There are three body parts of the bees. The head, the thorax, and the abdomen. The workers are girls that help the queen alot. Drones are boys that are very lazy. If the drones eat all the honey the workers get to kill the drones. You may have gotten stung by bees. The bees that sting are girls. They are the bees we see outside.

The Plants

At the farm we have lots of plants. We have plumeria and taro and tomato and several other kinds of plants. We plant corn and water it and take care of it. Later we harvest it and take it home and show our parents. I hope you can visit our farm on the web site.

Aloha from Makaha Elem. School - Hawaii

(Ayabe & Ford)

This will be Chapter 3 about our school farm.

The Kitchen

The kitchen is a place where the farm workers go for an award for working at the farm. That is where the people who work there get to make herbs.

The Nursery

The nursery is where the kids in Makaha plant seeds. That is where we put the seedlings, then when the seedlings are grown already they would go to the ground outside of the nursery. There is a screen around the place so the seedlings do not die of the heat.

The Hou Aina O Makaha Store

This report is going to be about the Makaha store named "Hoa Aina O Makaha." This store was built in the year 1998. This store is located at the farm of Makaha Elementary School. This store was built by the farm teachers and helpers of the school. It took a long time to build and a lot of hard work. This was to be built for the enjoyment of the students. The Hoa Aina O Makaha store is a store that sells candy and drinks. This store is not very big. It is about seven to ten feet tall. The students of the school really like this store. The people that work at the store are the sixth graders. The workers there are friendly and have good manners. I really like the service that they have there. I think that the prices are cheap and affordable. Some of the students think that the store is very cool and they also think that it is fun to go there. They also think that the food there is very tasty.

The things that they sell are candy as in war heads, ice cakes, lollipops and etc. The types of drinks that they sell are juices and sodas.

The Workers

The workers on the farm sometimes have fun. We have to pull out weeds and sometimes we get to feed the goats and other kinds of animals. The people that work on the farm are Chelsey, Martha, Lani Girl, Rebecca, Kevin, Mikaela and Jessica. There are more people too. We all have to work on the farm every Friday.

by Martha

We hope you have enjoyed reading about our special school farm. It won a national award a few years ago. All of the Makaha students go there on a regular schedule to work and learn about growing things. You may look at our web site to learn more about our school and farm.
