Student Participations

The Kidlink Who-Am-I? Program
*

Hello everybody,

Welcome to the KIDLINK "Who am I?" Project. My name is Liz Exton and I'm the helper for those of you participating in English. I'm not a teacher, I test computer software for a living. I've been helping with KIDLINK for a couple of years and I also mentor students around the world. I'm 42 years old and I live in Bristol, England.

I helped with "Who am I?" last year and I enjoyed the "Virtual Vacation" module so much I decided to make it real, so I visited our friend Patti Weeg and her students in Delmar, Maryland. Here I am with some of my friends:

The teachers' information (dates of modules and links to teaching materials) is here:

http://www.kidlink.org/kie/nls/teacher.html

Workshops for teachers and facilitators (tech support) are here:

http://www.kidlink.org/kie/nls/english/workshop/index.html

http://www.kidlink.org/kie/nls/english/workshop/wrkshpnotes.html

These are really helpful, and I recommend you take a look at them so that you can get the most from the project.

The teachers' notes for the first module "Who am I?" are here:

http://www.kidlink.org/kie/nls/english/response/description.html

We start the module on September 20th but students can begin to think about the first lesson right now if they want. We're going to be talking about our names, how we got them, what they mean, if they have a nickname (a "for-short"). They can make acromyms of theur names like the one on this page:

http://www.kidlink.org/kie/nls/english/response/1STQUESTION.html

They can make graphs showing the most popular names in their class .....

oh! there's so much to be getting on with!

If you have any questions, just let me know;)

Welcome again,

Dear Kidlink friends,

We are Mrs. Weeg's third grade computer class. There are six of us in our group. Joshua, Heather, Ravon, Ebony, Keith and Brittani. Brittani is not here today.

Our school is called Delmar Elementary School and it is in Delmar, Maryland USA. It is a small town and there are lots of farms. There is a train that is across the fields from our school.

We just had a hurricane come through our peninsula. There was lots of flooding and we didn't have school on Thursday. Many people in Maryland didn't have electricity for a long time because of the hurricane. Heather's house lost electricity and her family burned candles to have light.

Ravon, Ebony, Keith and Joshua had flooding in their yards. Heather's road was flooded.

We want to take part in the "Who am I?" program this year. We hope you will write back to us and tell us who you are.

Your friends at Delmar,
Heather, Joshua, Ebony, Keith, Ravon and Brittani

My name is Christina Beyer. I am 13 years old. I go to school at St. Ansgar Middle School in St. Ansgar, Iowa. There is a train in the feild across from our school too! I've never been in a hurricane but when I was little I lived in California and I was in alot of earthquakes. Here in Iowa we have tornadoes. Luckily I haven't ever been in one.

Hello Joshua, Heather, Ravon, Ebony, Keith and Brittani in Delmar, MD and Christina in St Ansgar, Iowa!

My name is Liz Exton and I'm the grownup who will be helping with the "Who am I?" project. I live in Bristol, England, with my husband David and Snowy the cat. Some of our friends in Delmar will remember me because I visited their school this summer!

When we've all introduced ourselves we'll be talking about how we got our names. I thought I'd start things off by telling you about my name. My full name is Katharine Elizabeth, but I call myself Liz because it's shorter and easier to spell.

I'm from England and I was called Elizabeth after the Queen of England. Last year when we did this project I asked my mum why I was called Katharine. She told me an interesting story. The first Katharine was my great-great grandma, who was born in 1841. Since then there's been a Katharine in every generation and I'm the 5th! I think that's pretty cool, don't you?

Why don't you write and tell me how you got your name?

best wishes,
Liz Exton

Hello Helen and Grade 7 at the International School of Amsterdam,

Welcome to the Kidlink "Who am I?" project. I'm sorry I missed you out of the roll call - my fault entirely.

I've just read the answers to the 4 questions from Tom, Manako, Natha, Sandra and Mihori (did I miss someone out? - I hope not!). Thank you all for answering the questions. You all write beautiful English;)

I lived in Amsterdam for 6 years and I liked Manako's comment about making the roads safe for cycling. It would be nice if all countries had their roads organised for cycling, just like the Netherlands;)

Did you see the acronyms from our friends in Texas? Would you like to make acronyms for your names too?

best wishes,

Hello Silvia and the students at SCUOLA MEDIA STATALE "SPALLANZANI".

Welcome to the "Who am I?" project. You are enrolled in the project... you can send email to the list!

We have another school from Reggio Emilia (Cavriago) who I think are doing the project too. They joined us last time and I think they really enjoyed the project;) Maybe you know them?

best wishes,

Hi!

We are an Enrichment Class from Makaha Elementary School. There are eleven students from third through fifth grade in this class. Our school has a little bit over 700 students. Our little community is in the town of Waianae in the state of Hawaii in the U.S.A.

Many of us live near the beach. We like to surf, swim, boogie board, fish, and relax after school and on the weekends. It's a great place to have parties, barbecues, picnics and camp-outs. We like to build sand castles and collect shiny shells. There are lifeguards to help keep us safe. Sometimes the jellyfish sting us.

It's really exciting to go diving, snorkeling and jumping off the rocks and pier. Some people fish from boats, others use nets or spears. Because we are a year-round school, we are almost ready for a one week vacation in October.

Aloha from,

Samuel, Martha, Shatonia, Sarah, Charae, Taylor Ann, Jenyssa, Derrik, Justin, Pai, and Toni

Aloha!

Welcome to the "Who am I?" project!

I'm Liz and I'm the adult helper in "Who am I?" I'm sure you're going to enjoy the project. Have you seen the acronyms our friends in Texas did? Maybe you can make acronyms of your names too;)

Is a boogie board one of those little round surfboards that scoot around really fast in shallow water? I think they're really neat.

best wishes,
