Welcome to Lyngdal in Norway!

Norway is a country in the North -Europe. About 4.5 million people are living here. The word "Norway" means the north-way.

The oldest terms of the name are written down over 1200 years ago. In Norway we say "Norge", in German it's "Norwegen" and in French it's "Norvege".

Most people in Norway speak Norwegian. About 20 000 speak Lapp. The Lapps are a minority group living in the north of Norway, and they keep reindeers as a living. In the north of Norway there is also a small group of people who speaks Finnish.

Norwegian is perhaps difficult for foreigners to learn, because we have two different ways in writing our language. In addition we have a lot of different dialects. Norwegian may also be difficult to pronounce, because we have 3 letters that is not usual in other languages - æ, ø, å

We will invite you to visit us in Lyngdal.

Lyngdal is a small, rural place, south in Norway. Lyngdal got its name from the river, Lygna, which runs through Lyngdal.

This community has about 6500 inhabitants, but in the summer there is twice as many. Lyngdal has 3 great fjords. Lenefjorden is known for its green colour in the summer and it is a popular place for tourists.

Rosfjorden has a large camping site, a hotel and a beautiful beach, and Kvavikfjorden which stretches from Lyngdal to a town further south, called Farsund.

It is the enormous variety in nature that is so special for this part of the South coast of Norway. In a short time you can get from the skerries to a nature which reminds of the typical high mountains of Norway.

Every year in the beginning of September, Lyngdal has a cattle show, called Dyrskuet. For one week-end people can buy and sell cattle or you can just look at all sorts of animals. It is more than a 100 years old tradition, but nowadays you can also join a tivoli, buy all sorts of things and there is always something happening on the stage.

According to the saga, St. Olav, one of the most famous Norwegian kings in the Viking age, stayed at Sælør in Lyngdal in the autumn 1028.

In memory of this event there is a statue of him outside the church in Lyngdal.

Greetings from 6A - Berge barneskole
