Retrieve the page you want to translate
(for example,
1STQUESTION.html). If
you do not have FrontPage or Composer, you are recommended to use Internet
Explorer for the job. Click here
for more information.
-
Save the page on your local disk,
using the same file name as the source document (for example, save
1STQUESTION.html
as 1STQUESTION.html.
Very important:
Store the page as "Web Page, HTML only (*.htm,
*.html)
-
Translate by
overwriting the English language text.
This minimizes your risk for destroying
formatting, for removing hidden links that may be used by other web pages,
for forgetting something.
Using the trick described at
the Internet Explorer page,
do as follows (Just skip what you already know.):
-
Click at this link to
1STQUESTION.html
to retrieve the lesson plan page with your browser.
-
Look at the page's web address (on the
Internet Explorer address line). It says
http://www.kidlink.org/kie/nls/english/response/1STQUESTION.html
-
Save the page on your disk so that you can translate
by overwriting the English text with sentences in your language. Store it
in a subfolder on your disk under a folder carrying your language's
name rather than "english".
Example: If your language is "harka", and you want
to store the page on your C:-drive, store it at
c:\kie\nls\harka\response\. If your language
is "norsk", store it at
c:\kie\nls\norsk\response\, etc
Use the name of
your language for this folder as it has already been used at www.kidlink.org.
If no translations into your language exists yet, write
Odd de Presno . Tell him
your intent, the name of your language, and suggest a directory name to use.
-
Click at File | Save As,
and select the Internet Explorer save setting:
"Web Page, HTML only (*.htm,
*,html)".
-
Edit the file name suggested by Internet
Explorer so that it matches the original (1STQUESTION.html)! Make
sure case is typed correctly (HIGHER and lower case characters). On
my Norwegian language PC, the file save menu box now looks like this
("Lagre i:" = "Save in") as shown at right. Again, you must
use exactly the same file name (1STQUESTION.html), and there must
be no spaces or slashes (/ or \) in the name. (Hint: When storing another
file than 1STQUESTION.html, and you don't remember the file name,
move the menu block down so that you can read the browser's address line.
Point at the blue line at the top of the menu, keep the left (or upper) mouse
button down while moving the menu block downwards).
-
Select the folder where the page is to
be saved using the "Save in" dialog window at the top of the Save
Web Page menu. If you don't remember, check the browser's address
line again. If it says
http://www.kidlink.org/kie/nls/english/response/1STQUESTION.html,
and you're saving a translation into "norsk", it is to be stored in the
"response" subfolder of the "norsk" subfolder of the nls
subfolder of the kie subfolder.
-
If this window shows the name of another folder,
click at the
(up
arrow) icon until you see the name of the current disk drive on your system.
If you do not want to store it here, select the drive where you want
to store the page.
-
If the "kie" folder is not available on this
disk yet, click at the
icon (create a new folder) - . Type kie as the new folder name.
-
The folder kie is now available in
the list of folders. Double click on the folder to open it.
-
The next level is the subfolder nls.
If it is not available yet, click at the
icon (create a new folder), and provide nls as the new folder
name. Double click on the folder to open it.
-
The next level is the subfolder
for the name of your language. If this subfolder is not present, Click
at the
icon to create it. Example: If your language is "harka", type
harka
-
Double click on the language name subfolder
to open it.
-
The last level is the folder for
the first module of the
Who-Am-I?. This is
called response. Create this folder as explained above,
and double click on the folder name.
-
Double check that the
settings in Save Web Page window is correct:
File name: 1STQUESTION.html
File type: Web Page, HTML only (*.htm, *,html)
Save in:

Now, click on the "Save" button, and you are done.
If you have another browser, or cannot find
out how to do it, then here is how you can create the directory using DOS.
Go into DOS, and enter these commands:
mkdir c:\kie
mkdir
c:\kie\nls
mkdir
c:\kie\nls\harka
mkdir
c:\kie\nls\harka\response

Storing the page with graphics is optional. If
you do, be careful not to translate the wrong file. :-)

Load the page you saved on your local
disk into your editing tool. If the page is on your C: drive, and you're
using FrontPage, click File, Open, and retrieve
c:\kie\nls\xxx\response\1STQUESTION.html . Example: Assume your language
is "norsk," and that you have saved the page at the D: drive. Start your
editing program, for example Microsoft's FrontPage. Click File,
Open, to get the page at
d:\kie\nls\norsk\response\1STQUESTION.html up on your screen. You
may not see any illustrations (graphics files), but FrontPage will clearly
show where these illustrations are, and how much space they
allocate.
