Who-Am-I?
Making Sure Images Are Displayed

Links | Images | Final check!

One typical error when changing links is to inadvertedly change the <IMG SRC= links. They are used to display images in people's web browsers. This is how to check if they have been altered in your translation:

Line feeds Line feeds often contain this image command: <IMG SRC="/icons/dotclear.gif" height=1 width=30>. It's only purpose is to display blank space, in this case 30 pixels long, 1 pixel high. If your page has "dotclear.gif", then the blank space will not be displayed. Instead, the browser may show a funny sign to indicate that an image is missing. Make sure your translation has all: "/icons/dotclear.gif" references.
The colored line There are two occurrences of the colored line on overview.html. Here's a shorter example: . The code to display this line contains this section: <IMG SRC="/icons/line_4.gif" . Make sure /icons/ is included in the line above, or you might get that funny sign instead.
The logo at top left Check that this logo is represented by: <IMG SRC="/icons/topbar.gif" WIDTH="42" HEIGHT="30" ALIGN="Middle" BORDER="0">
The logo at the bottom The logo is displayed by this code: <A HREF="/index.html"><IMG SRC="/img/logo-tiny.gif" WIDTH="45" HEIGHT="46"></A>. Make sure your link points to /img/logo-tiny.gif, and not elsewhere.

Hint: If you have these images on your disk, you will be able to see how they work on the page with your browser. If you're storing the page at C:\kie\nls\xxx\response\ as recommended, and have already retrieved the images as explained at the Internet Explorer page. Then, copy these three images over here on your local disk:

c:\icons\dotclear.gif
c:\icons\line_4.gif
c:\img\logo-tiny.gif

As of now, when you view your translated page with Internet Explorer, the lines, the logo, and the paragraphs will display just fine.

If you don't know how to copy the images

If you're using a fairly new version of Internet Explorer, have retrieved the web page with images as explained here, and do not already have these directories on your disk, here's an easy way to put them in place:

  1. View the page you have saved on your disk with images using Internet Explorer.
  2. Point your mouse at the logo. Click with your right (or lower) mouse button, and select "Save picture as". Select the drive in which you have your translation, then right click on the white window showing all the directories. Select "New folder," and name it img. Then, save the image in this directory using its correct name (logo-tiny.gif). Make sure the name uses lower characters only. Case matters in web pages!
  3. Dealing with the two other images are not that easy because it is so difficult to get to them with your mouse. Rather than explain why, here's what you can do:
    1. If you do nothave an c:\icons directory, you can easily do this in DOS using this command: mkdir c:\icons
    2. Click at the Windows Start-button, select Search, set it to search on the drive where you stored overview.html with images, and enter line_4.gif by the Name: prompt. If you have retrieved the image file, it will appear on your hit list.
    3. Point at the image with your mouse, click the right mouse button, and select Open from the list. This will open the image in an application that will allow it to save the image at c:\icons
    4. Now, search for dotclear.gif, and save this at c:\icons as well.

Completing your translation

Your name and email address must be added to the footer of the page. Also, remember to update the page's date with today's date.
