Translating with AOLPress

Not good when translating to a language using non-Latin characters!

Art by Xor (16), boy, USA, 2002.

The free AOLPress web authoring tool, version 2.0, 32bit for installation under Windows 9x, is available for retrieval here. Just click at aolp20-3.exe to download. The file is 3.6 mb with file creation date 24-03-97. I have used it extensively for translations into Norwegian.

This program is not good when special characters is being used by your language!

  1. Open AOLPress, and retrieve the English language source page you want to translate (for example, 1STQUESTION.html).
  2. Save the page on your local disk, using the same file name as the source document. For example, save 1STQUESTION.html as 1STQUESTION.html. Important: Do not translate directory and file names!
Hint: Your translations may be completed faster if you store pages in matching directories (or folders) on your harddisk. Example: Store http://www.kidlink.org/english/general/overview.html at c:\spanish\general\ overview.html (on your C drive) if translating into Spanish.

Select File | Save As, and save the page to your local work folder (on your PC). A "Save As" window opens. Click at "Options..." and mark off "None" by the choice "Safe Images / Frames". The top two of the other options should be marked off (Relative links to full URL, and Relative Java Applets)..

All links on the web page will now be correct (going to the English language pages, that is), and all links to embedded images will go to http://www.kidlink.org. The latter is easy to remove later when translation is completed. This will save us a lot of work!

If this is the first page you are translating for Kidlink, then you may save both of us some time by e-mailing us the page you just saved on your disk so that we can check whether images and links are represented correctly. When e-mailing the page, sending it as an attachment is usually good. If you know how to send the page as a ZIP archive, it would be wonderful as you will have full control of what we get!

[If you can see the locally saved web page's images in your browser when viewing it, chances are that you did not save it using the "Save Images / Frames" setting.]

  3. Translate by simply overwriting the English language text.
Translate the page's title. Translate verbatim! Do not translate the name Kidlink.Be careful not to do change embedded image codes or destroy anchors!

Special: The top navigation bar, Links, text in illustrations, Search, Footers (the bottom of pages). Marking untranslated links (optional).

  4. Spell check your translation
  5. Check all links!
  6. Credit yourself for the translation.. :-)
