Subject: [KIDCORE] South Eastern Iceland

Dear friends,

just to share with you some life in Iceland. I am now in south eastern Iceland at place called Hofn (harbour) It is located close to our glacier Vatnajokull where we had the volcano eruption last winter and a small one last week. This place is so beautiful, to see the glacier crawl down from the mountains and 4 "toungs" slicking the ground one to a lake with icebergs so tall that it is difficult to imagine that they are just fragments of the glacier.

I sit here in the evening in a computer classroom listening to jazz (thanks for multimedia computers) and read my mail. I am working for a upper secondary school that have new project called "All teachers are IT teachers" very exciting for this school with round 100 students. We have been working all day.

I just got a letter from Namibia from Icelandic father there who is asking about Kidlink in the Icelandic language for his boys 10 and 11 year old. They need to communicate in Icelandic. This is something I didn't expect in real to have a letter from Africa requesting participation in Kidlink in Icelandic. He even asked if we could offer some teaching for his boys, we will try ;-)

Those boys speak French and Icelandic but starting to learn English, who knows if they will join us in other Kidlink areas later on. In Namibia is a little Icelandic colony since we support them in their fishing industry and I have been trying to get in touch with them for a long time but now it all seems to be possible;-)

Kidlink opportunities are endlless aren't they;-)

Dear KIDCORE

Did any of you know, that Laurie and I are going to have a child together soon? ;-)

Our son (my wife Bente's and mine!), Tobias (17) is an exchange student for the schoolyear 1997/98. He's in Texas right now, down South in Mercedes in the Rio Grande Valley, but one of these days he's moving North, and will be living with the family of Laurie, John, Dan and Sarah in Austin.

He couldn't possibly get himself a better host family. They share his interests for living music, and have been so amazingly wonderful to plan this together with!

This would not have happened, if it wasn't for Kidlink, for the Internet - and for the caring and openminded people working together here in our project.

Isn't life great!?! :-)

Hello Dear EPI, thanks for your message,

Sometimes I sent Spanish letters to KIDLEADER-SPANISH list before. I'm very happy that Veronica kindly translated our letter Spanish into English.

This is a story.

I teach 12-year-old-girl who came from Peru and she is able to read and write Spanish. She wrote Spanish letter to her friends in her class, but we don't understand any Spanish she wrote in her letters. So I asked Veronica to translate her letter. Veronica always kindly translated her letters.

So I translated English letters into Japanese. And I can pass her friends in Japanese letter.

• Melissa(Peru) Spanish letter,
• Veronica Spanish--->English
• Isamu English ---->Japanese
• Nanako read Japanese letter

that is the root. Of course Nanako wrote Japanese reply then I translated into English and send to Veronica. At last Veronica translated into Spanish. And Melissa is able to read Spanish letter.

This worked wonderfully. We are thankful for Veronica's help and KIDLINK.

This September I think to make a new project about languagae problem. How we are able to solve our language problem, how we do learn about international education. Patti helps us and think together how we create international education. Patti helps us and think together how we create a new project.

Thanks for your nice letter. Basicly I understood, what you wrote, even though my Spanish is still very, very limited. I only had two Spanish-lessons in my course yet. However I understood, that you were from the Uruguayan school, who sent us recipes for our Kidlink fair last year. Thanks for your help, it was very exciting to get recipes from many countries, and people attending the fair enjoyed it tremendously.

Since my Spanish is still so weak, I just tried out a new translation service on the Internet. I copied your message to a temporary WWW page: http://inet.uni-c.dk/~berg/TEST/Uruguay1.htm

Then I went to "SYSTRAN Software HTML Translation Page" on the address: http://www.systransoft.com/translate.html I put my temporary WWW address in the form, clicked the Spanish-English option, added my own mail address, and pressed the "Translate" button. Half a minut later, your Spanish text was translated and appeared on my screen.

I'll do the same proces with this English text now, but the reverse way: from English to Spanish. And in a few minutes, I can hopefully add a Spanish translation beneath. I'm not saying, that this is better, than being able to speak, read and write Spanish myself, but the Information and Communication Technology sure helps me on my way here :-)

PS: Right now the SYSTRAN translation service is still an alpha release, and there seems to many errors! But isn't it exciting anyway? And by the way, among the languages on the service are: Spanish, Portuguese, French, Italian, German, English and even Russian. Not all of them are directly "both ways", but you can probably most often navigate between any two languages via an English translation.

And here's the "Spanish" version. Hope it's understandable:

No obstante entendía, eso usted era de la escuela de Uruguayan, que nos envió las recetas para nuestro Kidlink justo el año pasado. Las gracias por su ayuda, era muy emocionante conseguir recetas de muchos países, y puebla atender a la feria gozó de ella enormemente.

Puesto que mi español sigue siendo tan débil, acabo de probar un nuevo servicio de traducción en el Internet. que copié su mensaje a una página temporal de http://inet.uni-c.dk/~berg/TEST/Uruguay1.htm

Entonces fui ' página de la traducción del software lógica HTML de SYSTRAN ' en la dirección: http://www.systransoft.com/translate.html

Pongo mi dirección temporal de WWW en la forma, chasqué la opción de Spanish-English, agregada mi propia dirección del correo, y presionados ' traducen ' el botón. La mitad de un minut más adelante, su texto español fue traducida y aparecida en mi pantalla.

Ahora haré los mismos proces con este texto inglés, pero la manera reversa: de inglés al español. Y en algunos minutos, puedo esperanzadamente agregar una traducción española debajo. No soy el decir, ese esto soy mejor, que pudiendo hablar, leo y escribo español mismo, sino las ayudas seguras de la tecnología de información y de comunicación yo en mi manera aquí:-)

Picosegundo: Ahora el servicio de traducción de SYSTRAN sigue siendo un lanzamiento de la alfa, y se parece a muchos errores! Pero no está que excita de todos modos? Y a propósito, entre las idiomas en el servicio esté: Español, portugués, francés, italiano, alemán, inglés e incluso ruso. No todas son directamente ' ambas maneras, pero usted puede navegar probablemente lo más a menudo posible entre cualquier dos idiomas vía una traducción inglesa.

PS - In Engish: Among the funny translation errors, there the "PS" being translated into "Picosegundo" ;-) Actually I think, I did the whole proces in about 15 minutes.
