The Daily K- And T-portal Quotes

Many tools, services, and links referred to are only available to Kidlink administrators!
These guidelines assume that you have local copies of the two portals in directories having the same names on your disk.

Daily, a quote is selected from approved responses carrying the same day stamp, and posted at the K- and T-portals. Depending on the page of pages, older quotes are moved to a log file page. "The same day stamp" is the time as provided by our public database.

Criteria for selecting a quote: Responses containing a photo of the kid will be given preference, unless yesterday's quote came from the same country. A geographical spread of quotes is important to show visitors the global nature of Kidlink. If the quote is from a new country (ever), then it will often be given preference.

Selection and quoting process:

  1. Review recent submissions of photos with responses. If a desired response is unapproved - and acceptable - approve it.
NOTE: Many times kids send photos of artists or athletes. Try to be sure the photo is real.
  2. Review all responses approved by yesterday's date, and check if there are new countries requiring an update of our nations page.
  3. Select a response carrying today's stamp:
    • If you have selected a response based on a photo - and it is geographically eligible (yesterday's response came from another country), select this response.
    • If there are many eligible responses that have been approved, select one, and click to view it.
    • If the number of options is limited, go back to the response approval menu to find something more suitable there.
    • Make a choice now, or wait until later in the day.
  4. View the desired, and update today's quote at the K-portal first:
    1. Add the time stamp at top of the column of quotes
      (as in 26-Feb-2005 )
    2. Add the kids' name on the next line ("Julio from United States"
    3. Select the kid's country flag, and add after the country name.
    4. Let the kid's name of your quote link to the kids' response address, and open in a new window (_blank). Example: Julio's is at http://www.kidlink.org/registration/index.php?action=publicViewRecord&responseNumber=27423 hence, include the link as "Julio from United States "
    5. Make a new line (<br>), and add the kid's answer to the third question using italics (<i>).
Example Julio: "i would like people to not be so racial agianst other races of people also i would like everybody to have a roof over their head and food on the table."
    6. Change the font type and size to match the other quotes (<FONT face="Arial" size="2">)
    7. Load the kid's photo into an image editing program. Cut out a part of the kid's face as done by the other quotes. Resize the photo to have a height of 45 pixels. Store the photo at /english/general/k/img.
    8. Point before the first name of the kid at the K-portal, and insert the photo you saved. Set the image to float in the right margin of the table cell like done here.
    9. View the properties of the image in our private database, and copy the image's URL. Julio's is at http://www.kidlink.org/registration/pictures/mso43861.jpg. Make the image link to this URL, and open in a new window (_blank).
  5. Consider whether the list of links at the K-portal is too long. If too long, cut the last response, click at the More below, and add the quote at the top of the list.
  6. Go back to the K-portal, and copy the list of quotes (not the title and the links below).
  7. Go to the bottom of the page, and update the date in the footer.
  8. To the start page for teachers. Art by Nevena. 10 years. Girl. YugoslaviaClick at the icon for the T-portal (see right), to get directly to the quotes section of that page.
  9. Paste in the quotes from the K-portal. They're identical.
  10. Update the date in the footer of the T-portal page.
  11. FTP the new pages to global.
  12. You're done!

If your quote carries a photo, inform the person(s) in charge of Career and Voice.
