Kidlink WebShiner
Guidelines

The work is not as difficult as it may seem, and you do not have to do all the things listed below.

Art by Valentina (11) from Italy , 2005

  1. Important: Save the page on your local disk so that links to images and links remain as in the original. (How to save the page using Internet Explorer and some other programs). The first time, send us the saved page to see if you have got it right!
  2. Start with 3 below and work downwards. Continue as long as you feel comfortable with what you are doing. You do not have to do everything. Every step is helpful. We will guide you along!
  3. Make all fonts on the page Arial:
    1. Set the body of the text to font size 2 (10 pt)
    2. Set the footer (the text under the colored line at bottom of the page) to font size 1 (8 pt)
    3. Set the main heading of the page (above this is "Detailed Guidelines") to font size 5 (18 pt). Set additional heading lines (like "Kidlink WebShiner" above to font size 4 (14 points). Artist recognition should be set at size 1 (8 point), and other text in the header section to size 3 (12 points).
Note: Often, there may be codes like <h1>, </h1>, <h2>, </h2>, <h3>, </h3>, <big>, <small> in the hmtl code (source) of the page. If you feel comfortable wth it, please replace these codes by font size codes. Double check that you are not removing bold face texts where needed.
  4. If missing, add a top navigation bar (like at the top of this page), and a standard page footer (like below). Note: Links in these sections differ by directory. To get it right, "steal" from one of the other pages in the same directory (not the index.html page!). To find a list of the other pages in a directory, edit the web address of the page you are working on to get the dirinfo.html page. Example: the dirinfo.html page of the directory of this page is at http://www.kidlink.org/english/general/vol/dirinfo.html . From this list, it is easy to find pages with the needed lines of text. Contact us if you cannot find it. More about the top navigation bar.
  5. Check if the words in the page's title makes sense, and correct if needed: The word "Kidlink" should be part of the title, often preceding the text as in "Kidlink:" (The title of this page is "Kidlink: WebShiner Guidelines". In FrontPage, right click at the body of the page's text, and select "Page Properties". You'll find it high up on the "General" tab). Explanation we give to translators for your information.
  6. If missing, add a page description . (The description ib this page is "Information for Kidlink volunteers." In FrontPage, right click at the body of the page's text, select "Page Properties", and then the "Custom" tab. Click "Add" under "Custom", add "description" by "Name", and type the page description text below.).
  7. Page length: If the page is so long that the contents cannot be viewed without scrolling, consider cutting it into logical pieces. Example: The page about subscribing was split into three pages.
  8. If needed to avoid scrolling, move image, heading, and artist recognition up as done at this page if needed. (Making a table with two columns, and put the image in the cell to the left.) Usually, padding=6 is needed to avoid that image and text get to close to each other.
  9. If you feel comfortable about doing it, check if there are <STYLE type="text/css"> commands in the <HEAD> section of the page's html as on this page. If not, add the codes between <STYLE type="text/css"> and </STYLE> on this page by copying and pasting.

Work at your own pace. Each page you deliver will be highly appreciated! Your contribution will be recognized in the footer of the page as done below ("Page enhanced by Jens Jensen, Denmark").

Note: Our pages are being translated into many languages, and some of these are written from right to left. To make it easy for translators, our design must be simple. Also, our pages should have the same look and feel as our other pages.
