Approving Responses to

idlink's Four Questions

A team of volunteers read all responses to Kidlink's four questions. When approved, the person submitting them becomes a member of Kidlink. As a member, they receive rights, like a password to access our chat server, and more.

Most responses are easy to approve, and interesting to read!

Now and again, there is this impatient child who does not care much about what he or she writes. In these cases, we make contact in an attempt to make them take their answers seriously. Sometimes, but not very often, some adult may try to get access to children, or comes a youngster whith a rebel attitude.

Technically, approving responses is very easy. Most volunteers just open the bookmarks list in their browsers, select the approval service, and click to get there. A user name and password is needed to access the page.

The approvers' work space consists of a short introduction, and a list of responses to approve. The list typically looks like this:

The approver clicks on the name, and up comes the full response on a page. Here are some hints about how to handle various elements of the response:

Fullname
  • Real first and last names required.
Pictures or Photos
  • In the answering form, children can add images and pictures to their letters. You should check those images to see if they are appropriate, and if they violate copyright law.
Age, Birthday:
  • Does age match the birthday?
  • In some countries, students in secondary school may be older than in your country. Also, some persons may be in classes with much younger students because the are intellectually at that level.
  • Most users are 9 - 15 years of age, and some of them have parents who would hate to see their children hang out with persons at 21 pretending to be children in order to get inside. - Check this interpretation of Kidlink's age rules
  • A person at 21 claiming to be a teacher without being one, must not be accepted.
Country:
  • Country is selected from a drop-down list. Some children click on the wrong country, or some country they would fancy to visit.
School:
  • Required information
Teacher's nickname:
  • Required information if older than 15.
Question 1-4
  • children are free to honestly express their own views. Foul language or offensive manners are not allowed. One word responses to any of these questions should usually not be accepted. To the question about desired future job, "I don't know" would be acceptable if the rest is OK.
