| How Kidlink Started |
| In May 1990, Odd de Presno, Nancy Stefanik,
and Knut Braatane met at the Electronic Networking Association's (ENA) Fifth
International Conference in San Francisco, USA.
During two weeks just prior to the conference, Odd, assisted by Nancy, had organized a very successful online conference for 260 children in Norway, Canada, and the United States. John Ord at SciNet in Toronto provided a "home" for the Norlink event on the Canadian SciNet conferencing system. "May I exhibit posters, printouts, pictures, and drawings from our online conference?" Odd asked the ENA organizers. He got a prominent display area, and started to decorate the walls assisted by a growing crowd of impressed bystanders. "The interest is phenomenal," Odd said to Nancy and Knut. "We can do conferencing for kids again, as an ongoing activity, or we can drop it. However, if we drop it, we must understand that we are leaving something important behind. I'm willing to do it, but not alone. If you are prepared to help, let's meet to write an online invitation letter, and an announcement to the participants of the ENA conference." This same afternoon, they met in a San Francisco hotel room, and Kidlink was born. The date was May 25, 1990. |
