What was life like for our relatives 100 years ago? How was it different from your life?

My grandmother is Nicoletta and she is 75 years old. She is short and fat.
She has white hair and brown eyes. My grandmother likes pizza. Her
hobby is Knitting. I LOVE HER.
Samanta from Italy , 2000

How did they manage without TV or radio? What music was not around when your grandparents were young? How does the clothing that your grandparents wore when young differ from the clothes you wear today? Are hair styles the same?

  • My great-great-grandfather Jens Nielsen Kirk. My great-great-grandfather was born the 8/8 1836 and died 1909. He lived of making shoes, cos’ he was a shoemaker. He got in 1857 to Jensine. A day from my father diary: The 1. April 1866. Easter Day 9 o'clock took he and he family to curch and took the day off. He always worked late, but in return he often helped his friends and the other way around. They lived a very primitive life and didn’t have a lot of money. Jensine was housewife, who took care of the children and the house. Mette from Denmark , 1999.
  • My grandfather told me that when he was a boy he lived in a big farmstead with all of his relatives. There wasn't running water, electric power or heating. They warmed with the Fire. My grandfather played with a ball, and some glass bottles, and with those he made some artificial fires. In his town there wasn't a school, he had to go to other schools, in a near town. Usually he got up early, and he walked for some kilometres before arriving at school. He had not many suits, they belonged to his brother. He told me that when he arrived at MuggiÚ he thought he was in America because there were some articles that he couldn't see in his town: the TV and the radio upset my grandfather's life. Luca from Italy , 2001

He was elected the secretary of “Comsomol“ organization of the factory. It was a youth organization for young people in the Former Soviet Union. Several times he was awarded with certificates of appreciation on behalf of the administration and his colleagues for his excellent work. He was also awarded with ”Lenin?” award. In 1977 he started to work at the other enterprise "Electro-Izolit”. There he worked as the chief of laboratory. He died in 1992.There is an apartment and library with set of books as an inheritance from him. He was very inquisitive, read a lot and he had a good memory.
