Who-Am-I?
is primarily an agenda for discussions, for discoveries of important items
related to the art of living, of growing up. For example, these four questions
are found in the "Resolving
disputes" lesson of the "My
friends and family" module:
-
What causes disputes among people? Does competition for material things,
like who has the "right" clothes or what is the coolest music, lead to a
lot of disputes? Are misunderstandings more likely to lead to trouble?
-
What if the friends you hang out with want to do something you don't? What
do you choose - go with your friends or do "things" your own way?
-
Bullying is a kind of conflict that concerns many people. In your opinion
what is bullying? Why do bullies do what they do?
-
How should we deal with bullies? How should we help their victims?
While
Who-Am-I? was designed to support students and teachers
at school, it is also a perfect tool for grandparents wanting a meaningful
dialog with their grandkids. However, you would use it very differently,
simply because you are not bound by a curriculum, or a school's hectic time
schedule.
Let a hint about what
you might do:
These two gentlemen are my grandsons. One day they came into our home
like a hurricane. Eyes filled with other kinds of expectations than conversing
with old grandfather. However, I was prepared. Before they got out of their
boots, I shot off two questions from
first module of
the program: "What is the most popular name in your family? Why do you
think it is so?"
I saw them stop in
mid-air. Beautiful brains working intensively. To make a long story short,
we ended up by a photo of my father, his parents, sisters and brothers. I
named all of them, and provided some background. We had 15 beautiful minutes
together! Then they were gone ...
So, this might be the
trick. One question at the time. Do not worry at computers and Internet for
now. This may be introduced later, for example, to check what other kids
say to "How should we deal with bullies? How should we help their
victims?" above, or to share their views with other
Kidlink kids,
and receive questions or feedback.
Good luck, and please
share your experiences with us.
Other grandparents might find your "war stories" interesting and useful!
