Being A Discussion Host

Study chats in the KidCom Who-Am-I? room to learn how to organize lively meetings.

"Would you rather sing in a group or go solo?"

Invite others to your meetings:
  1. In your invitation, write:
    • The topic you want to discuss (Example: "Discussion about the war in Iraq")
    • The name of the room where you will meet them
    • Day (like: Saturday) , date (like: January 19) , the time when the discussion starts. (like: at 15:00 GMT.) - Time differs by country, so use GMT , and not the time in your country!
  2. Write your chat invitation in the KidCom room where you want to have the meeting.
  3. Send us your invitation here , and we will post it in the "What's New" page which is available to all the kids in KidCom.

More things you might do:

  1. Add a photo of yourself to your KidPage. We will use this to put your invitation up on the page for those interested in this topic. A photo will make your invitation much stronger.
  2. In each KidCom My Future Job room, there is a file called "Kids interested in this profession." Send invitation by KidMail to kids you want to invite.
  3. In the "Making The World Better" rooms, there is a file called "Kids having this dream for their future."
  4. If you want your invitation at the portal for kids , and the start page for your topic (for example, at the "No More War" start page ), then we must receive your text at least one week in advance, and the time must be provided as GMT.

Be in the chat room at the agreed time, and have a great time. :-)

Frequently asked questions about KidCom chats

Nathan from United Kingdom : in the time on the invatation can you say oh we will meet after school or put the numbers.

Answer: You must put the exact number. Example: At 14:00 GMT on April 16. Otherwise, other kids will not be able to find out when to meet you. Also, you must be in the room on time! Most kids are very impatient, and will just leave the room if there are nobody there.

Tianee from United States : how do i host a KidCom room?

Answer: Hosting a meeting is just like doing it in a face-to-face meeting. Visit the room before the meeting, and look around. If there are some special things you want to discuss, or if you want the meeting to have an agenda, put your suggestion up in the file area for easy reference. This way, you can ask everybody to look up file number xx to read your ideas during the meeting. Be there on time! Others may be there already . Say "Welcome!", and "Let's start." Good luck!

Karan from India : Is it like a face to face meeting?

Answer: When others are in the room when you are there, it is like a face-to-face meeting. However, in KidCom, everybody can speak at the same time. Nobody can stop others from talking by being LOUDER than them. KidCom will make a record of what is said, so the discussion may continue after the end of the meeting.

Your challenge will be to get others to be in the room when the meeting starts. Invite and advertise your meeting! Make sure they understand what the time of the meeting is in their local time. Finally, they must remember to go there (sometimes, the toughest part).

Austin from United States : how many people can be in a chat room?

Answer: KidCom is built using standard web technology (html), and may have as many simulteanous visitors as capacity of our web server dictates. Our server is a "virtual server" at the University of Cincinnati , Cincinnati, Ohio, USA. Bandwidth is high.

Daniel from United States : How do I get kid's email addresses?

Answer: You cannot. E-mail addresses are private. Send them a KidMail. They will be told by e-mail when KidMail is waiting.

Morghan from United States : can i talk to other hosts?

Answer: Click at the their names when in KidCom to send them a KidMail, or meet to chat.

Ragnhild from Norway : I am Norwegian, what shall I do if i`ve got problems with understanding ?

Answer: Ask, and we will try to explain.

Jeneum from New Zealand : Can i actually talk to people who are from other countries??? (cause i sooo want top talk to other people who have the same intrests as me!!!)

Answer: Yes, if they are in a chatroom when you are there. First, invite them to come. Make sure to make appointments to meet when the others are awake. Check our GMT clock time page when planning your invitations. Be in the chatroom on time.

Marine from France : In English !! about everything??

Answer: You are now in the Kidlink area for those who want to use English. KidCom has chatrooms for discussions in other languages.

Nelson from United States : Can I talk about a certain topic?

Answer: Yes, indeed you can.

Maria from United Kingdom : If I can't do it a certain day,how do I tell someone?

Answer: Write a message in the room before the meeting is about to start.

Oscar from United States : am i going to have moniters privlillges to kick or ban poeple out of that room?

Answer: No.
