Landmark 2012 Introductions

Forums:

G'day everyone

Jane Lowe from Perth in Western Australia. Today is the first day of the school year for our students. I will be introdcing the Landmark Games to the class today. This year I have only 2 students who have participated in the games before and I know they will convoince the rest of the class that it will be great to join in as I know they both really enjoyed participating last year.

I will post more about my class after today once I have met them. I should have 29 students, 11 Year 4 and 18 Year 5. We have a 1 - 1 parent-funded laptop programme in our school from Year 5 - 7 but most of my students including the Year 4's will have their own Macbooks. This will make our research this year a whole lot easier.

Til next time,

Jane

Hello from the Midwest!  I am helping 2 grades (4 classes) participate in the game this year.  Teachers Lynne Shemaitis (grade 7)  and Connie Kabellis (grade 5) will run the project with the students in Social Studies class and I will help them in the Computer Lab.  There are about 108 students participating in all!  We are a Catholic Elementary school near Chicago, IL.

I'm also looking to gather a Skype group to connect during and possibly after the project.  If you're interested, share your contact information with me in Skype:  tdallen5.

We have a computer lab and mobile lab and 108 enthusiastic researchers!  Looking forward to participating!

Salutations! We are the Schuylkill Valley Sporks from Pennsylvania, USA. We are part of the Schuylkill Valley Middle School enrichment program. There are ten of us in this program.

We chose the sporks because the United States of America is a melting pot of different cultures. A spork represents that because a spork is a combination of a spoon and a fork.  The spork also represents us as we are a combination of several unique minds and personalities that come together to perform many challenging tasks. We are competing for the first time and are enjoying this challenge, both the making of clues for our landmark and looking forward to the clues made by you.

Good luck,

Schuylkill Valley Sporks

We will have two teams, Barneveld Team A with 16 seventh graders, and Barneveld Team B with 17 seventh graders

Should have the clues to you sometime late Friday or early Monday. We are fired up!

Dear fellow game players,

We are from Colwich, Kansas. Our school animal is the Eagle CAW CAW! Our favorite meal is fried chicken and strawberry koolaid. Just because we are from Kansas doesn't mean we live on a farm (...even though most of us do...). In our free time, we like planking and playing lacrosse. Our favorite books are the Harry Potter series. We are very excited to join you again in the landmarks game!

Dear fellow landmarkees,

We are so excited to join the Landmark Games with you. We are the fantabulous 7A Mockingjays at St. Mark's School. It is located just west of the Wonky Wichita, KS. It is small and has about 300 super students in the grades Cute Kindergarten to the Crazy 8th graders! Here are a few of our favorite things that tickle our peach. Our favorite color is green periwinkle (don't ask). Our favorite book is the Hunger Games series. Our favorite food are peas. Our favorite song is Jar of Hearts, because you know, everyone likes jars...with hearts in it. We love learning and we can't wait to have some friendly competition with you. 7A wishes you luck and we will win! Just kidding! ;)

Dawul

Dawul Remote Community School is located in the Woolah Aboriginal Community on Doon Doon Station in the North-East Kimberley Region of Western Australia.  The landscape in this vicinty is stunning, and every year, thousands of tourists from all over Australia, and indeed the world, come to enjoy its wild beauty.

At present, the school has a total enrolment of 25 students from Kindy to Year 11. School starts at 7.00 a.m. and finishes at 12.55 p.m., with two short breaks in the morning.  We start so early because for most of the year, it is very hot.

Our class has 12 students - all girls - in Years 4-7, who love school and really enjoy learning about places outside this isolated community.  This is the third year that the Years 6 and 7 have been involved in Landmark Games - so they are old hands at it.

After school and on weekends, the children can be seen playing on the community's basketball court, swimming in the creek that runs through the community (during the wet season), fishing for barramundi and bream in the nearby river or hunting goannas and bush turkeys.   The latest recreational activity in the evenings is 'toad busting' -  catching poisonous cane toads that have arrived in the local area this wet season.

The girls are looking forward to the competition and send their best wishes to all the participants.  They also look forward to answering everyone's questions.

Best regards,
Kaye Wheeler

Hello Fellow Landmark Searchers,

We have 15 girls and 15 boys in our class at Gerald Ford Elementary School in Indian Wells, California. Most of us are 10 years old.

Our school is in the Coachella Valley about 100 miles north of Mexico and 100 miles east of Los Angeles. Our area is desert surrounded by mountains. This year we have had almost no rain. Our water comes from the Colorado River in big pipes. Creosote bushes are native here and can live to be thousands of years old. It can be as hot as 130 degrees fahrenheit and rarely freezes. Tourists come here to escape cold in the winter. We hide indoors to escape the heat in the summer, LOL.

Good Luck in the big game!

Dear Landmark Game Participants:

Alconbury Middle/High School is located near Huntingdon in Cambridgeshire, England.  It is an American school that is located on an Air Force Base.  Our school has about 230 students in grades 6-12.   We are a middle school seminar class.  During seminar we usually have assemblies and/or homework and project work time.  We like to challenge ourselves with new projects, so we have joined the landmark game.  Though we only meet once a week, we are going to work hard and do our best!

Good Luck!

Mrs. Wilson’s Class

Quality Not Quality!

Greetings:

We live in Lynchburg, Virginia in the United States.  Our team is made up of 18 seventh graders who are playing the game during an enrichment period.  Teams from our school have played the Landmark Game in the past, but this is the first time any of us have played.  We are up for the challenge and think we’ll have a lot of fun.

Ours is one of three middle schools located in a middle sized urban city.  We have approximately 625 students in grades 6, 7, and 8.  We are the only middle school in town that wears uniforms.  Our school colors are hunter green and white so for our uniforms we can wear khaki or black bottoms with dark green, black, or white tops.  Our mascot is the jaguar.

We have sports teams in football, volleyball, cross country, basketball, wrestling, tennis, track & field, and soccer.  We are usually the city champions in ten or eleven of the sports.  We have a very large music (band and orchestra) program as well as an active drama program.  We are also a STEM school with math, science, technology and engineering available through classes and enrichment activities.  Math and Reading are main focus areas as well and we have incentives for student improvement.

We look forward to reading your introduction letters to learn more about your school and where you are located.  We may sound meek and mild in this polite letter, but we are very competitive and promise you a challenging round of the Landmark Game.  May the best team win!

Sincerely,

LMS 7 Team

Area 7 has decided that they will work intwo groups this year for the Landmark Games.

The Year 4's will be Team Lowe 4 and will participate in the Primary Games.

The Year 5's will be Team Lowe 5 and will participate in the Challenge Games. This will be our first attempt at the Challenge Games.

We are looking forward to hearing from all the teams in both groups.

Grey Nun Academy - Yardley, PA

We are the 6th grade students at Grey Nun Academy.  It is a school with 200 Pre-K to 8th grade students.  We are located in beautiful Bucks County, just outside of Philadelphia, PA.  Our school is close to the location where George Washington crossed the Delaware.

Our class has 8 boys and 10 girls.  We enjoy playing many sports.  Our team mascot is the GNA Gator.

We are looking forward to playing the Landmark Game and learning about many new places.  We will be playing this game as part of our Social Studies and Library classes.  We will be learning geography and how to search better on the Internet.

Hello Terry,

I’ll tell about our team. They are 6 girls and 4 boys, grade 5. Maybe somebody else will join to them. They want to take part in Landmark game because they like puzzles and it’s a good opportunity to practice English. My pupils have different interests. Some of them like to draw, some boys do boxing and play accordion, some girls make poems (only in Russian) and dance, and everybody likes to learn something new. I think they'll like Landmarks.

Oviedo is a small city in northern Spain, some 30 kilometres from the sea. It is a nice, quiet place with  a population of 200,000 people. It is an area of hills and plains and there are mountains to the south. We have a temperate oceanic climate. It frequently rains but it is never very cold or hot.

During the early Middle Ages it was the capital of a small kingdom and due to its well preserved old stone churches dating from the 9th century it has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Our school is located in the centre of the city, next to a beautiful park. It a secondary education school (ages 12-18) and it has 900 students.

There are 18 second year students in the class that is taking part in the Landmark project.

Greetings from the Trailblazers in Liberty, Missouri~

We are a group of students from Lewis and Clark Elementary School.  This year we will have two teams participating in the Landmark Game Challenge Level…a fourth grade team and a fifth grade team.  Each team has approximately 100 students.  Kids in our school can be involved in many activities such as, Fitness Club, Service Learning Club, Choir Zone, Page Turner’s Book Club, Mathletics, Reading Adventure Nights, and Student Council.  Lewis and Clark is a really great school with kind students and nice teachers.  Students work hard to complete goals but we also have fun.

Liberty is very close to Kansas City.  Therefore, we love to cheer for the KC Chiefs and KC Royals.  Liberty is also home to William Jewell College.

Our school has played the Landmark Game for MANY, MANY years and we love all that it has to offer…problem solving, use of prior knowledge, team work, utilizing research skills, and perseverance.  All of these are great skills we all need to learn and practice!

We wish you all the best of luck and we hope you have a fabulous time learning all you can in the next few weeks!

Hello fellow Challengers!
This year we are having two teams from our school participating in the Landmark Challenge.  Fourth grade students will be a team and fifth grade students will be a team.  Yes we will be competing against each other….let the games begin!  We are from Liberty Oaks Elementary in the Liberty School District in Liberty, Missouri.  Our school has about 569 students in Kindergarten through 5th grade.  Liberty Oaks is 7 years old and our mascot is the “Lions”!  We are about 15 minutes away from downtown Kansas City, where the Country Club Plaza is located.  Every year on Thanksgiving there is a huge Lighting Ceremony that lights up the entire Plaza with colored Christmas lights.

Our school has a special time of the day called “Pride Time”.  For the first 30 minutes of the day everyone in the whole school reads whatever they wish.  The students also set reading goals each month to help reach our building goal this year of reading over 2 million pages!

Many students at Liberty Oaks participate in a variety of activities after school like sports, dance, boy scouts, girl scouts, Spanish lessons and music lessons.  Did you know the famous author, Mark Twain, was from the state of Missouri?  Many of our students participate in a reading program or challenge named after Mark Twain.

We look forward to the challenge and can’t wait to get started.    Good luck to everyone!

The American Community School at Beirut, Lebanon (ACS) was founded in 1905, when a small group of American parents from the Syrian Protestant College, now named the American University of Beirut, (AUB) founded a school that offered an American curriculum.  Currently, we have an enrollment of over 1000 students, in four divisions (Early Years, Elementary, Middle and High School).  Our Landmark participants are from our Grade 4 and Grade 5 classes.
