Module 3 - Organize Your Dream Project

Lesson 1

Art by Earth Club - Japan

Look around... pay attention... Things have their own order and our lives follow cycles and steps. Nature does the same. Even without a visible power, you feel that animals, plants and many other things follow a rule - they are organized!

You have your own way of living and, when your eyes are opened, early in the morning, you start planning and organizing your day. Is it a day-off or a day full of hard work? You open your window, feel the weather and decide what you are going to wear. Your day goes on and you keep organizing things.

It won't be different with your dreams. You and the other youth will have a new challenge now: find the best ways of organizing your dream project. These steps will show you a complete view of your goals and the tools you have available to make your dream happen.

When we think, important issues can be mixed up and unorganized. Sometimes it will be necessary to stop and review each point. Your peers are another essential ingredient for your dream project's success. We will see that your dream is a complex engine that needs each part working well, with harmony and creativity.

As you can imagine, this will be the time for schedules and outlines. We will concentrate our efforts as the main responsibilities for the complete success of each small goal.

In Modules 1 and 2 you have worked hard to identify and make a commitment to a dream project that you feel strongly about and also share with others. In doing this you have examined closely your dreams and the dreams of others. You looked for common themes to combine and identified pieces of dreams that had to be eliminated because they were not relevant. At times this meant you had to negotiate and weigh options. You made decisions that required cooperation and teamwork.

Now it is time to organize your dream project plan with your other team members wherever they may be around the world.

As you organize and design your dream project be mindful that Kidlink will recognize outstanding projects at the end of the I Have a Dream program. A scoring rubric will be used to judge the merits of each project. You may want to review the rubrics to understand how your project will be judged.

Teachers, coaches and youth! Remember to register for the program, or add members or coaches to your team. ! If you have registered your Dream project in previous modules you don't have to do it again.

The activities and discussions below are suggestions. Use these as a guide for completing the program. You may always substitute other activities that are more suitable for your needs.

Let's Get Organized!

  1. What is the main goal of your dream project? Write a summary of your dream project goal in paragraph form. Share this with other I Have a Dream youth across the I Have a Dream KidCom rooms for your language. When you write your paragraph include:

    • Who will benefit from your dream project? Be specific.
    • When will the project take place? (Look at the time line for the project)
    • How will it take place?
    • Who will support the plan?

    Sample dream plan goal:

A team of Kidlink students in Norway, Botswana, China and Argentina propose a dream plan to bring students from Arab and Israeli countries together in dialogue using the Internet. Youth who are isolated from each other by war will have the opportunity to learn and grow together online using a safe environment for non-threatening communication made possible by the Kidlink dream team. Supported by Kidlink, international organizations, major corporations (hardware donations) and adult leaders in the two warring countries, the dream will become a reality.

  2. What are the smaller tasks that must be accomplished before you can achieve your main goal? Make a web or flow chart to identify these tasks.

  3. Who will do these tasks?
    1. What skills are required to do these tasks? Create an advertisement with job descriptions:

      Positions Available!
      Apply to: nickname
      Job Description Requirements
Budget Manager excellent in math, knowledge of spreadsheets
Web Designer knowledge of HTML, graphic design

    2. How will tasks be distributed? Will youth apply for them? If so, who will make decisions on the applications?
      Choose one
      • Write a persuasive letter applying for a job
      • Write a résumé applying for the job. You may use this template if you like.
    3. How will you make sure your team reflects a global project? Post your "Positions Available!" information in the I Have a Dream KidCom rooms in your language.
    4. How does your team plan to overcome language obstacles and appreciate cultural differences in your global team? Share your plans for this with other youth in the I Have a Dream KidCom rooms.
    5. Will your team have a place for youth of various ages? What accommodations will be necessary?

The chart below reflects a sample project management team. Your chart will list more positions than you see on this chart.

    Dream Project Management
    Person Job Description Country/School
Kerstin Viig Project Director Norway/Eydehavn Skule
MingYu Wu Assistant Project Director China/Wuchang School
    Graciela Diaz Financial Advisor Argentina/Bridges
Kunta Mosime Technology Advisor Botswana/Kgaswe School
    ? ? ?

  4. When must the tasks be completed? Who will make sure that they are completed on time?

    Task Start Date Completion Date
Select Project Managers immediately 2 weeks
    ? ? ?

  5. Make a time line of tasks. Below is a small section of a sample time line.

After you have worked on items 1-5 above you will be able to fill in some of the blocks on your planning chart. Your chart will be much larger and more in-depth as you continue to organize your project. Fill in the left column first - the tasks. These are the first items to define. After your team identifies them go back and fill in the rest of the chart. In Lesson 2 you will spend time selecting the right people for the tasks at hand and completing that column of your organizational chart.
