Finance Your Dream

Lesson 3

"Few will have the greatness to bend history itself; but each of us can work to change a small portion of events, and in the total of all those acts will be written the history of this generation." - Robert F. Kennedy

Celebrating the culmination of I Have a Dream

You have worked hard and it is important at the end of successful work to celebrate. No matter how things worked out for your dream project it is time to celebrate all the hard work, the people you got to know and how you yourself developed during the project.

There are many ways of celebrating. You know that people around the world do not all celebrate in the same way. Maybe it is time to learn how they celebrate in a new way. Remember to celebrate online as well as locally!

Here are some suggestions for your celebration planning. Of course you might just like to do it your own way and that is good too. But celebrating is important since every milestone should be focused on in a positive and a cheerful way.

Investigate celebration methods around the world.

  1. Ask your international team how they would like to celebrate. Can you do it together via KidSpace or KidCom? It would be nice to chat during the celebration with your colleagues and participants. Will you use the project KidCom room?
  2. Look at Kidlink's Multi-Cultural Calendar and see if you find ways to celebrate that you would like to try out.
  3. You can look at how the Kidlink Annual Celebration in May each year is planned and see if you would like to use ideas from there.
Planning your local celebration:
  1. When and where will it be held?
  2. Whom are you going to invite? People you might want to invite are parents, people who helped out with the project, community, media people.
  3. What kind of food are you going to have? It might be good to ask your international colleagues what they are going to have and try to do the same to add international flavor to your celebration. In Kidlink there is a Multi-Cultural Recipe project. Maybe you will find something there.
  4. How are you going to decorate? Will you print out something from the project? Try asking your international partners how they are going to decorate and see if you can use their ideas. Maybe you will display pictures of the flags of the countries that have participated in your dream project.
  5. How much does it cost? You might want to try to let the celebration be inexpensive. Can you ask people to help out with that?
Planning your on-line celebration:
  1. Be sure to recognize all those who have been in the project with you.
  2. When will your on-line celebration be? Will there be a celebration for all who have participated in Kidlink’s I Have a Dream program? Check that out.
  3. What tools will you use for your on-line celebration? Be sure to check them out beforehand to minimize the risk of technical failures that could occur.
  4. Inform all your on-line friends and team when it will be held. Take care to give the time in GMT since the time around the world is very different. You can use the World Time Server to see the time. Point that out to everyone so they can find what their time is in relationship to GMT.
  5. What shall happen in the on-line celebration? Look at the suggestions we have below and see if they fit into your on-line celebration.
Informing the media about the milestone in your project:
  1. Send information to local newspapers, radio and TV stations with a short description of the dream project. It is also good to send pictures of you or something from the project if they decide to cover it.
  2. Maybe you want the media to join in on your celebration. If so remember to have someone dedicated to take care of the media people when they arrive. It is best if you know beforehand if they can come and what they want to cover.
Announcement of awards
  1. You can plan announcements of awards during the celebration. How are you going to do that?
  2. What do you have to prepare if your team won one of the contests?
  3. What will you do if you don't win anything? Can you create some local awards for your team or participants?
Documentation
  1. At the end of the project what kind of documentation do you want to create about the project? Do you have it already?
  2. Where are you going to store information on your dream project and how it went? At your school? Local library? On the Internet?

This has been a big project with a lot of successes as well as hurdles to jump. Now it is time to give yourself a big pat on the shoulder and enjoy that you were able to do all you did. You have created memories that you will carry through your life and also for many others. Don't forget to celebrate in your soul.
