Whales and Humans

Project Activities

ADOPT A WHALE ACTIVITY-

Select a whale type. Register information
about it's length, weight and how it looks; draw a picture of it; tell what it eats; tell us the temperature of the sea where it lives; tell us if that type of whale can live anywhere else in the world; tell us about the travel pattern of your whale; tell us the total known population of your type of whalee create a homepage for your whale on the WWW.

WRITE ABOUT WHALES ACTIVITY-

Write a poem on a whale or whales.
  • How might it feel to be a whale?
  • How would you feel if you saw a wwhale?
  • If you were an animal living in the sea, how would you feel when you met a whale?
Write a short story that has whales in it.  Either as a the main character of the story or about someone meeting a whale.

Take part in writing a "ping-pong" story.  This type of
story is one where one class or individual starts the story, then another group adds to it and so on until the story is completed.  We could also have different possible story continuations with links to the various
additions, changing the story based on the link you take!

Write an informative essay about whales based on research.

Share any whale tales, stories or legends from your part of the world.

WHALEWATCHING ACTIVITY-

If you have been on a whalewatching trip, share your
experience with others on the list.
  • Did you see whales?
  • What kind?
  • Wasit cold where you were?
  • Did you get seasick?
  • How did the whalewatching
  • company organize the trip to help you see the whales?
  • Do you think people should go on whalewatching trips?
  • Do you think it endangers the whales?
Create your own virtual whalewatching company on the WWW.
How would you offer trips?  What could your clients see?

WHALE HUNTING ACTIVITY-

  • Who hunts whales today?
  • Why do they do it?
  • Do you think that anyone should be allowed to hunt whales, why or why not?
  • What is done
  • with the whale meat?
  • How is it prepared for sale?
There is some controvesy over amount of fish whales
consume, depleting fish populations in some areas.  Do you think it is right to protect one species over another?

Some people like to eat whale meat.

  • Do you know anyone who has eaten whales?
  • Did they like it?
  • Would you like to tast it?
  • Do you know of any whale recipies?

FAMOUS WHALES ACTIVITY-

Keiko is an orca (also known as Killer Whale) that was hunted in eastern Iceland in 1979 and brought to the United States where he has lived since then.  He will be moved September 10th back to the Westman Islands in Iceland and freed.
  • Have you seen Keiko?
  • If so, where did you see him?
  • In a movie? In an aquarium?
  • The sea around Iceland is could and rough, do you think that Keiko would like it there after warm pools in the United States?
  • Do you think that people in the United States will   miss having him there?  Do you think that the kids in the Westman Islands will like to have him there?
  • Has there been anything in the media in your area about Keiko's release?
  • Do you think he will survive?
