MATH IN CAREERS
Helena Flats School Kalispell Mt
Interview on Mr. Lambert our school custodian.

How do you use math in your workday?

Mr. Lambert uses math when he is look at his list of jobs. First he estimates how long each thing will take. Then, he tries to see how many jobs he can get done in the 8 hour workday. Another math event in Mr. Lambert's day is ordering cleaning supplies and paper towels. He figures out how much he uses then multiplies that by 2 or 3 so he can have 2 or 3 weeks of supplies and will not have to order them every week. Some math tools he uses are measuring tapes so he can build things like tables and adjust the desk to the right height. Finally he uses ratios when he mixes so much water with so much cleaner. So as you can see he dose a lot with math on and off the job!

Interview on Joe Younkin
Question(s) What part of your job is math involved? What kind of math
are you dealing with?Such as fractions, multiplcation, addition,
subtraction, division ect. He uses a book to find out how much rpm
somthing is turning.

60 to 70% of my dads job is dealing with math.
The types of math my dad uses are fractions, decimals, geometry and
formulas.
He works at PlumCreek lumber mill.

The person I interviewed works as a Heavy Mobile Equipment Mechanic. He
uses math in his work by measuring capacities, and equipment. He also
does by figuring out hydraulics, pressures, and florates. He designs,
and builds items out of metal, and he has to do all the accounting, and
bill. He figures out crane load limits, and has to read tire
pressures. He also uses math in tune ups.

Kenny from Mrs. Bernstein's class. Helena Flats School. Kalispell, MT

My mom is a checker at a grocery store and this is some math in my mom's
career. Sometimes she must figure percentages for discounts, counting
change and subtracting manually.

Edwin-from Mrs.Bernsteins Class Helena Flats School Kalispell,MT

My name is Ann and I am an 8th grade Math Olympiad Student in Mrs.
Bernstein in Kalispell Montana. My mom's name is Lorraine and she is a
Consumer Bank Manager for Norwest Bank in Kalispell. Working in a bank
she uses math a lot in her job. Everyday she has to calculate
percentages for sales, goals, debt ratios, efficiency, and ratios for
people and her employes. She also has to do regular equations like
addition, subtraction, dividing, and multiplying. She has to figure
payments for people who have to use budgets when they get loans. She
also has to figure many dollar amounts and efficacy rates of her
employees.

My mom is the assistant rescores. She figures out how many thousand
board feet (MBF) of each species for each log. She also figures the
total amount of logs that come in each day. The total amount of hours
each person does and how much they should be paid for payroll is
something else she does. For work she figures out the bond; the timber
sales in the five different forests, figures out how much each person
needs to pay for firewood they have taken, and she has to keep track of
how many tail cars come in and out.

Brandon from Mrs. Bernstein's class

My mother day is calculated on how many stops she does (for UPS) and she
records all this information into an electronic dial pad. When she gets
back to the UPS station she sticks her dial pad into a machine and it
collects all the information Each year UPS looks at this information and
sees how many packages are delivered and how many people get them. Then
they see if they need any more employees by how many packages she
delivers.

Derek from Mrs. Bernstein's class

My cousin Bob Ericson said that he uses math in pouring foundations and
making beams because he is a engineer.
Randy from Mrs. Bernstein's class Kalispell, Montana

My mom is a Marketing Representative. She uses math in her job all of
the time. She has to count how many bags of compost a costumer wants.
She also has to multiply the cost of 1 bag by the number of bags a
costumer wants. She has to depend on math alot. She has a very good
math sense. One of the things my mom does is with math is she measures
the bags to see how much compost can fit in the bag.

Kitt from Mrs. Bernstein's class Helena Flats School Kalispell MT 8th
grade

I interviewed my mother. She is a baker. She uses a lot of math in her
work. My mother uses fractions to measure out how much stuff she needs
to put in her recipe. She also has to use multiplication to double
recipe. She uses addition, subtraction, division and decimals also. She
also has to find the total cost of supplies and then do some other stuff
to find out how much she should charge. When she is all she has to
find out how much money she made.

Holly-from Mrs. Bernstein's class in Helena Flats School Kalispell, MT

I interviewed Holly's mom, Tammy. She is a Baker. She uses math in
everything she does. She uses fraction alot when she measures out
mixtures. She uses addition and subtraction too. When she has to make
double of things she has to use addition and subtraction. Also doing
that she uses multiplication. Every time she bakes she uses math.

Lindsey-From Ms. Bernsteins Class at Helena Flats School in Kalispell MT

Bob: How do you use math in your everyday life?
Mom: I use it by keeping the company check book shopping and cooking

Bob: How do you use it at work?
Mom: I use it when I give change, do supplies and Inventory.

Bob from Mrs. Bernstein's class
Helena Flats School Kalispell, MT

I interviewed my dad. He is an HME. He uses math to figure out what
sizes of tools and parts he needs to do his job. He also uses math to
figure out how much money he needs to buy a part or tool. My dad uses
math to figure out sizes of tools like a one-quarter bolt and other
things like that. He also uses math to know when he has to go to work
and when he is at work how much time he has to do a job or get something
done.

Sara-from Mrs.Bernsteins Class Helena Flats School Kalispell, MT

My Dad is a landscaper. He uses math all the time. He has to find out
how much soil to get and sod. If he gets to much he looses money. he
uses geometry to set grades for retaining walls and setting just plane
grades. He uses addition and subtraction all the time when he adds
prices he can give bids. He uses % in figuring out how much a job will
cost and how much is profit.

Daniel from Mrs. Bensteins' class
Kalispell Montana

My mom uses math in many ways. Some of the ways she uses it is buying
groceries, so she has to round up the prices. She has to balance her
checkbook. My mother also has to give us our allowances and pay bills.
She figures mileage on our car to deduct from taxes. She also uses math
in baking and sewing.
