Greetings from Mrs. Cave's Third Graders at Bonny Kate Elementary School,

Bonny Kate Elementary is located in Knoxville, Tennessee. We have about 420
students in grades Kindergarten through Fifth Grade. Our school was named
after Catherine Sherrill (Bonny Kate). She was the second wife of Tennessee's
first Governor, John Sevier. Go to: http://www.korrnet.org/bks/bkpoem2.html to
learn more about our school's namesake.
Our class has participated in "The Bug Hunt", "100 E-Mail Exchange", "The
Valentine Exchange", "Backpack Buddies," and hosted a "Flat Stanley" project.
Knoxville, Gateway to the Smoky Mountains, is home to the University of
Tennessee Lady Vols Basketball Team (1997-98 National Champions) and UT Big
Orange Football (SEC 1998 National Champions).
Located in the Tennessee River Valley, Knoxville has many areas lakes.
We'll soon get to visit one of these lakes when we go on our field trip to
Norris Dam on Norris Lake and the Museum of Appalachia. We'll learn about our
region's history and get to walk across Norris Dam.

Your friends,

Hello ! We are 7th and 8th graders from Paul Laurence Dunbar Middle School
in Fort Myers, FL. The 7th grade class is 9 weeks of MultiMedia and 9
weeks of Introduction to TV. Next year, some of us will take TV Production, and
do a live, announcement program called Eagle Eye News. The 8th graders will
learn PowerPoint, HyperStudio, and do simple web pages. We have a strange
situition here, because 2 classes are starting the Landmark Game, and 2
different classes will finish it because our semester changed Jan. 15. We
are writing the introduction and deciding our Landmark and clues, but the
other classes will get to do the search !

Our school is about 1000 students, and has a Gifted Center of approximately
400 students. Our school has just had soon really great news - we are
getting a brand new building in 2 yrs. You can see it at our website:
http://www.lee.k12.fl.us/dun /prototype.htm
Unfortunately, we won+t be here to enjoy it - we+ll be in high school !

We take 4 academic classes and 3 exploratories. We have a great music
program. Many students take band, orchestra or Chorus. We have the only
middle school symphony in this part of Florida. Our intermural sports
program is lots of fun; we almost always make the playoffs !

Fort Myers is in southwest Florida, and is known for our sunny beaches. We
are also close to the Everglades. During the winter, we are known for
oranges, snowbirds (aka tourists), and manatees ! Sanibel and Captiva
Islands are just a short drive from here. Many famous and rich people visit
these islands during the winter. Willard Scott broadcast the TODAY SHOW
weather from there last week (Jan. 22,+99). (He has a home on the island.)

We also have a new hockey arena for a farm team called the Everblades. They
have been doing pretty good for their first year, except when players move
up. We also enjoy spring baseball. The Boston Red Soxs train at the other
end of our street, and the Minnesota Twins train out at the Lee Cty. Sports
complex. Students sometimes get out of school with their parents to go see
an afternoon game. (neat !)

We are sorry we won+t get to do the search (Mrs. Carlson says it is great
fun, and so do the kids who did the Capitols Game 198). Good luck to all !

Dear Landmark Participants,

We have two classrooms in our school with two teachers and one aide. There
are 25 students in our school. All the students can walk to school because
our school is on the colony. A colony is a place where people live and
work together. We grow vegetables, wheat, barley, and canola. We also
raise beef cattle, dairy cows, pigs, chickens, and ducks. We live in north
central Montana just west of the Rocky Mountains.

Good luck in the game.

capital of Michigan, at 42 degrees north and 84 degrees west. Otto is one
of four public middle schools in the city and we have a multicultural
enrollment of about 820 students. Magic Johnson and Stevie Wonder are both
former Lansing students!

We have participated in many social studies projects, as well as math and
language arts contests, through the Internet. We have also been involved
in many keypal projects. We have discovered new friends and resources all
over the world. We hope that you are having a great year! Good luck and
keep in touch!!!

5th grade, and is one of ten elementary schools in St. Charles. St.
Charles also has three middle school and one high school. In two years,
we will have two high schools and one more elementary school. Our high
school is well known in this state for swimming and soccer.
St. Charles is about 30-40 miles west of Chicago. We are located along
the Fox River. The population is about 23,000 and growing.
We look forward to participating in this project. This is the third

Hello from Maplewood SPARK Center, Sulphur, Louisiana.

Sulphur is located in the southwest corner of Louisiana. The population
is about 21,000 people. Our area is famous for outdoor and water
sports, Mardi Gras, Contraband Days and for having sulfur mines here in
the early 1900's. Many people here are of Acadian descent, but you
don't have to be Cajun to enjoy foods such as gumbo, jambalaya,
etouffee' and po-boys.

We attend Our Lady's School in Sulphur. On Tuesdays we go to Maplewood
Middle School to attend the SPARK Center. Our teacher there is Mrs.
Lisa Monteith. For more information about our class you can see our web
site http://204.80.173.250/~maplewd/12.06.96.html

We are looking forward to participating in the LandMark Game!

In our class there are twenty-five students and this academic year is very difficult because we are in the 1st year of "Bachillerato" (non-compulsory secondaray education).

Our school, I.E.S. Cerdeņo, is quite big. Students come here when they are twelve and they stay until they are 18, or later (technical education). It is on the outskirts of Oviedo.

Oviedo is the capital of Asturias (in the North of Spain). It is a small city (200,000 inhabitants), but it is very beautiful. In Oviedo you can do a lot of things: you can go to many parks, you can visit museums, historical monuments…

Dear Landmark Participants,
We are third-graders from Hamilton Central School, the only school
in the village of Hamilton, N.Y. There are seventeen in our class and
we have named ourselves "Carter's Creative Crew."
The village of Hamilton, named for Alexander Hamilton, was founded
in 1795.
We'd like to share some of our local history with you.
Just after the village was established, one of our most colorful
families moved to the area. The Loomis gang actually lived in nearby
Smithfield and Waterville, but spent much of its time hiding out in Nind
Mile Swamp because their neighbors didn't care for cattle rustling and
horse stealing. They had quite a business in the early-to mid- 1800's.
Hamilton is a rural area which used to have a fair number of dairy
farms and hops orchards. Hops were a big cash crop from the 1830's to
the 1920's when a blight did in that business. One of the early dairy
farming families gave some land for a school called Hamilton Literary
and Theological Institute which was foun ded in 1819 and later became
Colgate University. Today the village numbers about 2000 residents but
when Colgate is in session, the village doubles in size.
A lot was going on in the 1800's in Hamilton besides cattle
rustling, hops growing, and the training of young men for the ministry.
A canal was built through the village (1833-1837) which fed into the
Erie Canal. The canal was is in steady use until about 1874 when the
railroad replaced it. just as the century was closing (1895) there was
a big fire that wiped out almost half the village. But everybody
pitched in and helped rebuild the burned out buildings.
Along came the twentieth century and the railroad gave Hamilton one
of its best Halloweens ever. In 1955 a switch got turned the wrong way
causing a train loaded with candy from Hershey, Pennsylvania, to derail
, spilling candy all over the place. Villagers who were here then say
that kids didn't need to go trick-or-treating that year. Everybody had
plenty of candy. Trains no longer run through Hamilton and there are
only a few places where old railroad ties can still be seen.
Well that's the village our school is in.
We're really happy to be playing this game with you.
Mrs. Carter's 3rd grade class from Hamilton, NY

Hello Landmarkers,
We are a 5th and 6th grade gifted class consisting of three girls
(5th graders)and two boys (6th graders). We live in the middle of the
Ozarks and are only an hour away from Branson, Missouri and we are very
close to Table Rock Lake. In fact our teacher has a houseboat on the lake
and loves going there in the summer. Purdy is a small town with a
population of around 900. The economy of the area revolves around farming
and the chicken industry. We are between two larger cities, Joplin and
Springfield. Our school is all physically connected and all grades share
the cafeteria and library. We have an elementary section-pre-school-5th
grade, a brand new middle school-6th-8th, and a high school section-9-12.
There are around 525 students in our entire system.
This is our first time to participate in the landmark game and we
are very exited about it.

Dear Worldwide Friends,

Hello! Family town, kind, and close knit are all words that describe the
small but big hearted town of Ashby. We are Mr. Hogan's energetic fifth
grade class at Ashby Elementary School in Ashby, Massachusetts, United
States of America.

We are having fun while learning our solar system, the countries of the
world, and other world related topics.

Our town has less than 3,000 people living in it, and the school that we
attend has approximately 333 students. We have a very active student
council, PTC, staff, and student body.

Our challenging teacher, Mr. Hogan, has made our minds work like well oiled
machines and we should make your minds work like that too when you receive
our clues.

Did you know that the Underground Railroad ran through the surrounding
towns of Ashby?

Some fun events in our town include: The Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony,
The Pumpkin Festival, and The Band Concerts in the Summer.

We wish you good luck in the contest.

Sincerely,
Ashby Elem. 5H

Hello - from the grade six students in Lakeview Elementary School. We live
in Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada which is in Souther Alberta. We are located
in the prairies of Canada. Our city is just over an hours distance by car
from the American border on the state of Montana. The population of our
city is about 66,000 people. Our winters are very cold and summers are
hot. Chinook winds in the winter melt our snow and warm it up some.

Our school consists of 356 students from kindergarten to grade six. We
have many clubs and activities at our school. We have a leadership group,
a photography club and many athletic activites held at noon or before or
after school.

We have 32 students in our class. 17 are boys and 15 are girls. Our age
group is 11 - 12 years old and our homeroom teacher is Mrs. Thaxter. We
also have an assistant named Mrs. Dechief. Our school has a homepage so if
you would like to know more about us this is the site address:

Dear Landmark Game Participants:
Our school, Wickford Middle School, is participating in the
landmark game so we are sending a letter to inform you about our school and
our community. We are located in North Kingstown, Rhode Island, USA.
We will start off by telling you about our community. North
Kingston is a coastal town with mixed forest vegetation. Our exact location
is 41oN and 71oW. Our state, Rhode Island, is on the east coat of the USA
in a region known as New England. We are the smallest of the 50 United
States. Because we are located along the coast we have many nice beaches in
our community and many people sail and fish for recreation. One bad thing
about living in a coastal community is that occasionally we are hit by
hurricanes. In 1938 a horrible hurricane hit RI and the water level was 10
feet higher than normal. There is a high water mark in Wickford Village,
the historic region of our town. Because of our latitude, we have four
seasons. Our summers are hot and humid and our winters are often cold and
snowy.
North Kingston is a suburb of Providence, the capital of RI
and is located about 20 miles from the capital. We are a growing community
of 25,000 people. North Kingston is a great community to live in. There are
many new housing developments. The streets are safe and everyone is helpful
and friendly. The town is also a great place to visit. In addition to our
many beautiful beaches another tourist attraction is the Gilbert Stuart
Birthplace, located in Saunderstown, a section of North Kingstown. Gilbert
Stuart was a famous American painter who is well known for his portrait of
George Washington. Another interesting place to visit is the Old
Narragansett Church found in the heart of historic Wickford Village. In is
one of the oldest Episcopal churches in the US.
One of the reasons North Kingston is such a great community to live
in is the annual festivals which are unique to our community. One of these,
the Wickford Art festival is held each July. Artists from all over the
country, and even some from other countries, come to show and sell their
art. Thousands of people come to enjoy the excellent art. Each August our
town holds a Quohag Festival. A quohag is a shellfish which is found in the
waters off our coast. Many excellent foods such as chowders and clam cakes
can be made using the quohag. This festival is always a hit with lots of
great food and fun. Christmas is also a special time for our community.
Each December there is a Festival of Lights to begin the holiday season.
This year our community holiday festival was shown on Good Morning
America.
Now we will tell you a little bit about our school. There are
approximately 500 students in grades 6,7, and 8. We are organized into 5
teams. There are two 6th grade teams, one 7th, one 8th, and one mixed 7th
and 8th grade team. We are students on Team S, the team with both 7th and
8th graders. Our school colors are blue and white and our mascot is the
wildcat. We have a 7 period day with 5 academic subjects (math, science,
social studies, language arts, foreign language or reading) and two
specials (music, art, shop, home economics, phys ed etc) each day. Our
school has many extra curricular activities. These include yearbook,
chorus, band, student council and the newspaper. Students also have the
opportunity to participate in a number of sports; these include softball,
cross country, basketball, and baseball. There is something for everyone at
Wickford Middle School!
We are excited to be participating in the Landmark Game and are
looking forward to learning about your school and community. Good luck in
the game!

Our school is in London, Ontario. London is in south-western Ontario
....between Detroit (in the USA) and our capital, Toronto. We are famous for
our Western University and it's University Hospital. If you like Kelloggs
cereal, that next box of corn flakes might have been made here in London.

Although our teacher has done many internet projects with his other classes,
this is the first time we are doing the Landmark Game. We are all really
looking forward to seeing how everything works and how this game will work out.
We also hope to get to know lots of other students in other countries.

See you at all your different landmarks.

you get outside its pouring raining. What a place.

Our School
Nimitz Elementary School is named after Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz.
Our school first opened its doors in 1954. Our current enrollment is seven
hundred eighty five students in Grade Kindergarten through Six. Ninety
percent of the students have parents serving in the United States armed
forces. The school's colors are yellow and blue and the mascost is the
eagle. This school year Nimitz School was named one of three Blue Ribbon
Schools in the state of Hawaii.
Some of the student activities include, Student Council, Malihini
Greeters,JPOs, and Peer Mediators. The Student Council plans money making,
educational and fun activites for the students. The JPOs help student
cross the streets safely. The Peer Mediators help students solve their
differences. The Malihini Greeters welcome new students to our school and
escort them to their classrooms. Because of military deployment, Nimitz
School enrolls and releases new students continuously throughout the year.

Our Class
Our teacher is Mrs. Kaneshiro. We have 22 students in our class. Most of
us are not from Hawaii. We are from many different states and are here
because our father or mother has been assigned to a military base here.
Our stay is about four years.
Some ofthe sixth grade activities we will experience are, Sixth
Grade camp, punch card system, and Kaneshiro Town. In March, we will be
going on a three day, two night stay at Camp Erdman where we will
participate in Outdoor Education and Cooperative teaming projects. The
punch card system rewards students for doing their work and good behavior. Kaneshiro Town
is a project where we learn to balance a personal checking account and get
paid for doing our homework and for good behavior. With all of this
practice, we should be able to manage our finances in the future.

Our Community
Most of the students in our school live on either Hickam Air Force Base or
Aliamanu Military Reservation (AMR). Both Nimitz School and Hickam Air
Force Base are located right next to the Honolulu International Airport.
Please come and visit us here at Nimitz School when you arrive at the
Honolulu International Airport. Some of the students come to our school
while they live at the hotels nearthe airport as they await assignment to base housing. This is why we are called the "hotel" school.

My apologies if you receive this twice. I received an error
message--possibly because I sent it from home the first time???
Whatever the problem, now it's coming from school address.

I first sent this introduction from my home computer because we had
been home for the 7th day of the 10 since Christmas break. Our school
missed Dec. 22, Jan. 4-6, 8, 11, and the 14th. We finally made it on
Friday the 15th. We've had a mixture of snow and ice. Last night's ice
made the roads simply treacherous--many cars off the road in ditches,
many accidents. I hope not too many injuries. I asked my students to
give me some information to put in the introductory letter.

Now for a little about our school and our community. We are a 6, 7, 8
middle school in Vincennes, Indiana, a town of about 20,000 on the
Wabash River which forms part of the southwestern border of our state.
There are about 800 students at CMS. Our school is named for George
Rogers Clark,an American soldier and frontiersman. The comedian Red
Skelton called Vincennes his hometown.

A G/T class of 23 students (9B, 14G) will be doing most of the work on
this game, but another 100 students will be watching and helping if they
can. We are all part of the Tribe Team. There is another 6th grade
team known as the Clark Bars. This is the second year that Mrs. Mize's
classes have participated in the Landmark Game.

We want you to know that basketball is very popular in this area. Our
sports mascot is unusual. We are called the "Alices." That may seem
unusual, but our fans are very loyal to the name (and the teams).

There is also a Junior College in Vincennes called Vincennes University.
The Trailblazers are always well know in JC sports.

Many people in this area root for IU (Indiana University), but Mrs. Mize
is a Boilermaker fan. Do you know the name of the school where the
boilermakers play?

We are looking forward to asking questions and solving clues.

School from Lancaster, Pennsylvania. We are learning about Ancient
Civilizations this year. We look forward to the challenge.
Our school is a private elementary school with classes K-8 and an
enrollment of 425. We are in the heart of Dutch country with many
tourist attractions concerning the Amish. We are approximately 15 miles
east of the Susquehanna River. Please excuse the lateness of our
introduction. We have not been in school since the 13th due to snow and
ice.

We are sorry that this letter is so late but we had a snow day on
January 15, 1999.

Hi! We are in fifth grade at the Hardy School in Mrs. Siegel’s class.
Each day in our class always turns out to be a new experience. This is
because we learn new and exciting things each day. For example, when
we were learning about the three branches of the U.S. government, we
made a mobile. It was a really fun activity. Our teacher, Mrs. Siegel,
makes everything fun.

One of the fun activities we do in class is called computer centers.
The things we do in computer centers include playing educational games
and supervised Internet use. Our class also uses AlphaSmarts.
AlphaSmarts are portable word processors. We are allowed to take them
home and do homework. This helps our class develop creative writing
skills. Each day our class has a maximum of 2 hours of homework. Most
of the time our class is not assigned homework on weekends.

Math and Science lead to fun activities. For example, we play card
games to help us learn math facts. Some fun things we do in science
include the study of air pressure and flight. In this unit we make
paper flying objects.

Our teacher gives us lots of responsibility and has high expectations
for us to meet. Mrs. Siegel encourages us to try our best and helps us
with things that we do not understand. If everyone had a teacher like
Mrs. Siegel, people would love fifth grade as much as we do.

In Hardy School we all dress in different styles. First of all we do
not wear uniforms to school. Usually the girls wear overalls, bell
bottom jeans, sweaters, running suits, and skirts. Boys also wear long
pants, sweat suits, sweaters, and dress shirts. Lots of kids dress in
brand names like Nike, Adidas, and Reebok.

At our school we have a choice of buying or bringing our lunch. The
most popular foods are pizza, chicken nuggets, salads, hamburgers, hot
dogs and pasta. If we choose to bring lunch, we mostly bring
sandwiches. Lunch costs $1.50 regular milk $.30, and chocolate $.35.
There are also a lot of snacks to choose from.

At our schools we have some rules. Some are we are not allowed to
fight. In winter we have to wear coats outside at recess. There is no
running in the halls or building. These are the rules we have to
follow.

We have a lot of activities in and out of school. Some of us are very
athletic. Some of the sports and games that we play are tag, baseball,
truth or dare, hockey, run the bases, soccer, kickball, and rolivio. Also
some board games that we like are Scrabble, Shogi, Chess, and Checkers.
Some of our other interests are reading books. Most kids only watch
t.v.to see major sporting events and nature and animal shows. We like to
play video games. Some of them are Spyro the Dragon for Sony Play
Station and NHL 99 for N64. A lot of us like to write and all of us like
to read.

In Arlington you can receive a good education. We have 7 elementary
schools, 1 middle school, and 1 high school. Every elementary school
has k-5 grades and the middle school has grades 6-8. All schools have
a PTO who gives money for enrichment programs and field trips. Most
schools have a lunch hour of about 30 minutes. At our lunch time we
have 15 minutes of eating and 15 minutes of recess. We have really
good teachers at all our schools.

In this section of the letter, we are going to tell you about
certain people, special places, special events/days , some history, and
what we think about Arlington.

First, we are going to talk about Town Day. Town Day takes place
in September, usually a week or so after going back to school from
summer vacation. On the eve of Town Day, which is Friday night, there
is a big cookout at the Arlington Boys and Girls Club. There are also
neighborhood gatherings, especially when it is time for the fireworks.
During the day of Town Day (which is Saturday), there are booths set up
in Arlington Center. These booths include food, games, crafts, gifts to
purchase, raffles, demonstrations/information, and there is also a
section set up where you can go on some rides. There is also
entertainment. The High School Band plays, there are dance groups that
perform, and you can see aerobics and jazzercize demonstrations.

Another big event in Arlington is Patriot’s Day. Very early there
is usually a reenactment of when the Minutemen and British fight. In
mid-day there is a big parade.

We have a lot of history in Arlington. In Arlington we have a lot
of old houses including The Jason Russell, and The Jefferson Cutter
House. We also have a monument of Uncle Sam. He was born in
Arlington. Arlington used to be a town called Menotomy which was used
for farming. Because of Arlington’s rich soil, a lot of immigrants
moved here.

Arlington is pretty much like a regular town. It has libraries,
stores, schools, and acess to sports. Arlington’s surrounding towns are
Belmont, Lexington, Somerville, Cambridge, and Medford. This is what
Arlington is like. We think it is a wonderful place to live.

We hope you enjoyed reading about our class and community. We look
forward to this contest.

Greetings from the Ocean State:

Our class at Narragansett Elementary School has 25 students with
one teacher,Elaine Stedman, and a student teacher. In our town we have one
elementary school with 798 students in grades K-4, a middle school with
grades5-8,and a high school with grades9-12. The three schools are all
within a mile of each other. In our class we have been studying Weather
and and Colonial Times. We have been online following the Brazil
Expedition.
Rhode Island ,one of the New England states,is the smallest state
in the USA. It is 48 miles from north to south and 37 miles from east to
west with an area of 1,214 square miles. RI , one of the original 13
Colonies, was settled by religious refugees,.It is the site of the first
Baptist church, the first Jewish synagogue, and one of the first Quaker
meetinghouses.
RI is the second most densely populated state ,with our most
important industries being, health care, tourism and jewelry manufacturing.
Our forty miles of ocean coastline bring many tourists to our beaches in
the summer. Our school is less than one mile from the Atlantic Ocean.
Because of our proximity to the ocean we have a mild climate. Our average
temperature in the winter is 30.degrees F and in the summer our average
temp is 70 degreesF. We usually have about 44 inches of precipitation but
last winter we had about 100 inches of snow.
We are looking forward to participating in the Landmark Game.

H.K.I.S. Middle School

Hong Kong International School consists of people from many places
around the world. Students at H.K.I.S. learn to cooperate and accept
each other because of all the different races and cultures. Our school's
Student Advisory Council is made up of Chinese kids, American kids,
Indian kids, and more. Even though there are so many different
nationalities at our school, it is an American system school. Our school
is a Lutheran school, and every week we have an all middle school chapel.

We have eight homeroom classes for every grade, and the teachers
here are really cool. There are around 23 kids in every class. Every
day we go to eight classes. Math, science, social studies (geography)
Language Arts (English) modern language (with a selection between
Chinese, French, or Spanish) Music (either choir, band, or bach-to-rock)
one day, P.E. the other, Religion, Spices, which is either art, drama,
health/lifeskills, or computers. We also have a wide variety of after
school activities, such as rugby, soccer, field hockey, basketball, drama
club, Chinese, French, and Spanish club, chess club, swim team, homework
club, allegreto/bass, jazz band, dance, and more. H.K.I.S. Middle School
also has, every once in a while, intermurals, which play a variety of
sports every so often after school, one homeroom class against another.

H.K.I.S. Middle School is pretty cool when it comes to friends and
people cooperating. It seems like most everyone gets along fine and
there are really no enemies. And the kids get along pretty great with
the teachers too. We can hang out with our friends after school in the
cafeteria, or at the basketball courts in the amphitheater, or at the
bakery right outside of the high school, which is connected to the middle
school. We can also stay after for help n some work we don't get with
help from our teachers. There are three o clock buses for the kids that
go home right after school, four o clock buses for the kids that stay
after to just hang out or have a club, and five o clock buses for the
hockey, soccer, rugby, and swim team.

H.K.I.S. Middle School doesn't have uniforms, but we have a dress
code. We're not aloud to wear spaghetti straps, cutoffs, or any clothes
that show our underwear, and the guys aren't allowed to wear shirts that
advertise or say inappropriate things on them or pants/shorts that sag
too much. They aren't aloud to wear caps indoors either. We have P.E.
uniforms, though, that we're not supposed to wear out of P.E. class.

All in all, I think our school is pretty fun to go too. The kids
and teachers are great, and so is the way of teaching here!
