If you are new to KIDLINK and KIDPROJ.
KIDLINK participants use an assortment of email forums for the purpose of educational communication exchange among students through secondary school. Therefore it is necessary to subscribe to
certain email forums depending on the area of KIDLINK that you are interested in. These
email forums are where the action is!
KIDPROJ has been set up to meet the needs of teachers and youth workers wishing to use
the KIDLINK worldwide network to promote curriculum exchange between school and youth
group children through secondary school. Web pages display a project, are a place for students to
publish their work and are useful for classroom work but much of the action is on the KIDPROJ mailing
list therefore, subscription is required. Kidproj student work is also published directly on the web by teachers and students themselves who are registered in Kidlink's KidSpace. Students who answer the 4 Kidlink questions automatically receive a login and password for KidSpace

Subscribers to this list should be aware that the volume of mail may be quite large and
that many of the files will be lengthy (large files are to be expected when schools are
presenting curriculum achievements).

Subscribing to lists and answering the 4
Questions may be done from the web if your browser handles forms. Just follow the links
above. Instructions for email are at the links as well or read on below.
The email forum lists are maintained and operated by software called
"listserv". The email address for "listserv" is different from the
email address to post to a list. A "Welcome" letter will be sent to you from
each list that you subscribe to, with instructions about maintaining the subscription.
Commands are sent to "listserv" to begin a subscription, change a mail mode
or signoff a list. Several commands can be sent in one email provided each command is on a
separate line. Be sure that the return address is from a computer with your current email
address in the mail program. "listserv" reads the "Reply to:" to
verify your email address.
Here is an example to setup the adult leader on KIDLINK and KIDPROJ:
Listserv@listserv.nodak.edu
Subject: (leave blank)
In body type:
- Subscribe kidlink Diane Smith (Note:substitute your name)
- Subscribe kidproj Diane Smith
- Subscribe kidproj-coord Diane Smith
- No signature should be in the message.

- PS listserv doesn't know about capital letters except in your name. Now you know how to
subscribe to any KIDLINK email forum, just substitute the name of the list in the above
example.
Now you are ready to join any KIDPROJ project. Check the announcement or
project web page for instructions from the project moderator.

If you have joined KIDLINK and are new to KIDPROJ
It is only necessary to subscribe to the KIDPROJ email forum and the KIDPROJ-COORD
email forum. This web page will allow you to
manage your subscriptions from the web, subscribing to new lists or signing off lists.

If you have joined KIDPROJ and want to join a new project
Check the project announcement or web pages to see if the moderator is asking for
registration for the project, if so just follow the directions for registering. Check to
see if the project is using its own email forum such as Kidwriters, Kidroots, or Kidday;
if so, subscribe to the approprate list. Moderators sometimes ask for registration so they
will know who to expect to participate in the project, the geographical areas represented
in the project and for contact purposes. Other projects do ask for prior registration by a
certain date, particularily games.

The project mentions IRC, what are they talking about?
IRC stands for Internet Relay Chat. IRC is used for real-time
communication during a project and is also for individual use. Because KIDLINK attempts to
keep the online experience as safe as possible for kids, a separate registration is
required for the IRC section of KIDLINK. Registration may be for a school/site, adult, or
student up to the age of 15. Real identities are used on the IRC and chats are monitored.
A teacher/leader is advised to monitor student use of IRC.
There is too much mail! How can I cut it down?
You must first be subscribed to an email list to use these suggestions. It is possible
to subscribe to a list but not receive messages. Messages can then be read either from the
web or accessed by email at your convenience. This MODE is called "nomail".
"nomail" is also useful for vacation time or using more than one email address
on a list. To set your subscription "nomail" send this command to
listserv@listserv.nodak.edu
set kidproj nomail (again listserv is not case sensitive)
