In England we have many ways of talking about a grandmother: Grandma, Gran, Granny, Nan, Nanny, Nanna Grandma is probably the most usual. Gran, Nanny and Nan are very informal and rather down market. Granny and Nanna are more up market. Of course Shakespeare talked about Grandam can't remember the context off hand. Nanny is related to the name given to a mothers help in Victorian times. I think the way we talk of our grandmother often changes with our age too. So a young child might use Gran whereas an adult would use grandmother or grandma.
