My great-grandmother's name is Maria but we call her Musia. She is a wonderful cook. Long ago she lived in the Far East of Russia, that is on the coast of the Pacific. There were a lot of navy ships and she told me a lot about her life, about the Russian navy. She likes to remember about the past time. They had to burn coal to warm the house. There were only trams and horse-driven coaches in the city of Vladivostok where she lived. She liked to play the games that I do not hear about. It's so funny.

I have two grandmothers. My mother's mother is called Tanya. She is sixty-nine years old. The name of my father's mother is Zoya. She is older than Tanya. She is seventy-six. Both of them are widows. My drandmothers are very different. Tanya is short and thin, with short black hair and small brown eyes. She is very energetic and lively. Zoya is tall and slim with long grey hair and big blue eyes, she is very calm and strict. My grandmothers like to watch soap operas on TV, tidy the flats and talk with each other. Tanya enjoys booking but Zoya doesn't like it. I usually spend my summer holidays with my grannies in our country house. We always have a great time together. I love my grandmothers!

Hi,

When my great-granny was a child they lived on a top of a hill and there was no running water in their house. There were six children in the family but my great-granny was the eldest. So it was her duty to bring water up to the house. And it was a difficult task. They used a wooden pole (in Russian in was called "koromyslo") in this country. People put it on their shoulders behind their necks and hang two buckets (one on each end) with water on it. They say it was easier to carry water in such a way. The pole was ticker and shorter than the similar poles that were used in South Asia; I saw such poles in a films about Japan and Vietnam. They look a bit like "libra" - a Zodiac sign. Sorry I do not know the English word for it.

I love my grandmother very much. Her name is Lydia. She is sixty two and she has grey hair and dark green eyes. She loves music and dancing despite her age. I come to visit her in summer. My Granny gets up very early and begins to cook breakfast for me and my granddad. She is such a wonderful cook who cooks tasty meals especially cakes and pies. Then she cleans the house, washes up, and makes the beds. I always help her. My grandma and I love to talk together. We are good friends!

Hello, Patti,
You write that you want to know about the time when my grandmother was young. My grandma rarely spoke about her childhood because it was very difficult. She lived in a village. Her was was killed in 1942 during the war. At that time my grandma was 13. Her family was big. She had four sisters and a brother. She was the second child in her family. When my grandmother was 16 she left her village in search of work. She has been living in Moscow from 1950.
