Max's Jojos

Dear Patti

The Grade 1's and Max have at last written to reply to you about the Jojos.

Jojos are made of hard plastic. They used to be very popular, but are not so much anymore. Now Pokemon cards are the most popular things to collect. Jojos are all different characters and they are not all exactly the same size. They all have different names and numbers and some are more valuable than others. Brett says that the way you throw them makes them the best, but Garren says that the King Glitter Limmy is always the most valuable one as there are so few of them.

Jake said that four jojos could fit next to his pencil, but explained that his pencil is shorter than other pencils! Brett said that he has a "humungous" pencil at home that he will measure next to his jojos.

Yossi then fetched his jojos and brought them to the computer room. We looked at them all and took a photographs of Yossi's jojos to show them to everyone, because the children think they are too difficult to draw. Janna brought her pencil to the room and we could fit 6 jojos next to Janna's pencil. We also measured the jojos next to a paper clip and found that only two were the same height as a paper clip, the rest were all shorter, but they were not all the same height.

The shortest one was bright pink and Joshua told us it is called Boomer and is number 3. The tallest one was Black and Yossi said it is number 11 and its name is Jojo.

We have also sent a photograph to you of Max, Yossi (holding two jojos next to his face so children can see how small they are!) and Janna holding her pencil.

Warm regards
Mrs Hart

From Delmar Elementary School, Maryland:

Dear Max, Yossi, Janna and friends,

We saw your pictures! We have these toys, too, but we call them "Crazy Bones". We play games with them, too. One of the games is bowling. If you have the bouncy kind you can play basketball with them.

Christopher says: "I have some and will bring them to school next week. My mom-mom always gives me Pokeman cards."

Thank you for writing and telling us about Jojos. Your pictures are great.

Your friends at Delmar,
Christopher, Tiffani, Kyle, Paige, Delonte and Charles

Christopher brought his "crazy bones" to school as promised.

Dear Max and friends,

When I saw your jojos I knew they were just like my crazy bones. I brought my crazy bones to school. We measured a pencil with them and we found out that it takes 7 crazy bones to measure our pencil. Our pencil is 19 centimeters. We use inches when we measure. My new pencil that has never been sharpened is 7 and a half inches long.

Your friend,
Chris

Dear Max and friends,

Thank you for showing us your jojos. I like them. We have a toy that looks almost like them. They are called crazy bones. We measured our pencils with the crazy bones. We needed seven crazy bones to measure our pencil.

My granny gave me a baseball for my birthday. I love her very much.

Your friend,
Charles

Dear Max and friends,

I can line up 7 crazy bones next to my pencil. I estimated about how many crazy bones I could line up next to the keyboard. I thought it would be 20. I was close but I missed by three. I guessed too high. Can you tell me how many crazy bones fit along the side of my keyboard?

Both of my grandmothers are in heaven. I never saw either one but I live with my grandfather and I love him very much.

Your friend,
Tiffani

More about Crazy Bones

From Springfield Convent School, South Africa:

Hi Gade 1's - How much do Pokeman cards cost? Do you think the Springfield girls would want to buy them?

They all have different names

What are the Jojo names named after or are they magic names?

Brent says that the way you throw them makes them the best.

Brent - do some Jojo's throw better than others? If you say "Yes" why do you think this is? Are they heavier?

Darren says that the King Glitter Limmy is always the most valuable one as there are so few of them.

Darren - what does King Glitter look like? Maybe you could draw him for me?

Jake said that four jojos could fit next to his pencil, but explained that his pencil is shorter than other pencils!

Jake - do you chew your pencil or do you just draw a lot?

Brent said that he has a "humungous" pencil at home

Brent - can you think of 5 other words that also mean "B_I_G_" like humungous?

Yossi then fetched his jojos and brought them to the computer room.

I'd love to see your photos Yossi!!

Janna, how many Jojos would you need standing on top of another to make a statue as big as you are?

Joshua - do you have many Jojos? How do you know which one is the sahortest? Perhaps you have them all? Is there a picture of the whole group of Jojos somewhere?

Best wishes,
Mrs Bruton and the Springfield Grade 1's

Herzlia Weizmann replies to Springfield's questions

Hi Mrs Bruton and the Grade 1's at Springfield,

We are so excited to get all your questions and had a lot of fun answering them.

1. How much do Pokeman cards cost? Do you think the Springfield girls would want to buy them?

Daniel says a small pack of 11 cards costs R27,00 and a big pack of 60 cards costs R76,00 Mrs Donen (the Grade 1 class teacher) and I were really shocked at how much they cost and we didn't think we would spend so much money on cards ourselves, but the girls in our grade 1 class thought that the Springfield girls would love to collect Pokeman cards. These are some of their reasons:

Cara: They would all like Picachoo who is tall and they would like the cute characters.

Janna: I have Gold dug and even though he's not cute, I still keep him.

Shavit: Some of them are very cute.

Two of the boys (Garren and Yossi) thought that the girls wouldn't like them because they might get the big and strong ones, but the girls were quick to point out that they like big and strong ones too!

2. What are the Jojo names named after or are they magic names?

Their names are made-up names!

3. Brett - do some Jojo's throw better than others? If you say "Yes" why do you think this is? Are they heavier?

Brett said some do throw better than others, but he doesn't know why.
Daniel said it because of their weight.
Garren thought the size and weight made some easier to throw than others.
Yossi said that if they have pointy heads, they bounce back.

4. Garren - what does King Glitter look like? Maybe you could draw him for me?

This is Garren's drawing of King Glitter Limmy. He says he looks like a crazy guy with a crown on.

5. Jake - do you chew your pencil or do you just draw a lot?

Jake says he sharpens his pencil often.
Brett measured 14 Jojos next to his humungous pencil!

6. Brett - can you think of 5 other words that also mean "B_I_G_" like humungous?

The class had fun thinking of words:

Max: gigantic
Shavit: huge
Zac: enormous and ginormous
Jordan: large
Janna: very big

7. Janna, how many Jojos would you need standing on top of another to make a statue as big as you are?

Janna stood on a table and we measured 7 of her pencils next to her. Then we worked out that 6 jojos could stand next to each of the pencils. Half of the class worked out that 42 jojos would measure the same as Janna.

Joshua was absent today so he'll answer his question another time.

Our challenge for you is to ask you to please tell us 5 different games that you play at school and send us a photograph of yourselves playing one of them. We'd love to know if any other schools would like their grade 1's to join this discussion.

Best wishes,
Mrs Hart and the Weizmann Grade 1's
