Inventions and Granny's Age

Artist: Louise
Hello all of my friends at Herzlia Weizmann Primary School,

These are our Grade 1's answers to your questions:

1. She was born in 1898 and had gone to heaven by then. If she had still been alive, how old would she have been in 1970?

At first many of the Grade 1's called out "3000 years", but then we worked out that Patti's granny would have been 72 years in 1970.

Whew! I am very happy that she would have been 72 years old and not 3000 years old in 1970. If she were that old.... oh my... I would be *much* older than I already am. ;-)

But Brett insisted we tell you that his granny is MUCH OLDER!

Hi Brett. Wow! Let's see if we can guess her age. Now don't tell us. We must guess. If we are not correct, please give us a clue, but not a number, OK?

Does your granny's age end in an even number?

2. How old was your granny in 1981?

David worked out that 1981 was 19 years ago and explained how he worked that out.

David, you are really clever! Ask Mrs. Hart to give you a Math homework pass. tee hee Tell her that Mrs. Weeg said she should give you one. ;-)

It was really hard for the Grade 1's to answer this question, so in the end we decided to all work out how old Yossi's granny was in 1981. Yossi's granny is 66 today, so we worked out she was 47 in 1981 and the children thought that was VERY OLD!

Clever class! Oh no! 47 VERY OLD???? [tears] Mrs. Weeg is ancient I suppose....

3. What is in your house that your granny could not have owned?

Brittani - CD's and CD player
Joshua - computers
Janna - television (in fact, in South Africa we only got television in 1975, so most of the mothers and fathers of our children didn't have television either, when they were growing up!)

Very interesting. I wonder when other places got televisions around the world. Maybe our friends will tell us.

Yossi - computer games
Garren - laptops and Pokemon cards
Ayrton - Sony playstation
Jordan - Chappies bubblegum
Brett - printers
Louise - a calculator? (Louise isn't sure about this, but says she will ask her granny if she had a calculator when she was a little girl)

Louise, it is a great idea to ask questions when we aren't sure of something. Excellent!

We are looking forward to seeing the answers from other children!

Maybe your clever answers will spark others to look around their house for things that would not have been in their granny's house when she was young.

Love,
Lindsay Hart & Barbara Donen

Thank you, Lindsay and Barbara!

Hugs,
Patti
