Assessing Student Work

Student assessment will vary according to grade level, abilities of your students and your curriculum requirements. You might want to include the students when designing rubrics and assessment guides so that they know from the very beginning of the project how their work will be assessed. A simple scoring table is included below. You may want to use this or something more detailed such as this sample rubric from the "Who am I?" program. You would redefine the tasks to apply to the Grandmother and Me project.

Sample Scoring Rubric

Scoring Rubric for Grandmother and Me tasks
Score one point for each task completed:
Points Task Complete
1 I wrote the name I call my grandmother.
1 I wrote 2 details that tell about my grandmother.
1 I included a reason why I like to be with my grandmother.
1 All of my words are spelled correctly.
1 I used correct punctuation.
1 I made a picture of my grandmother.
1 I wrote about my grandmother in my language and in English. (where applicable)
1 I read granny entries from other countries.
1 I found the countries of other granny entries on a map.
1 I sent a message to a student in another country who wrote about his/her grandmother.
1 I examined a sampling of granny entries and made a chart of what I found. [such as the various ways students call their grandmothers or the ways students spend time with them]
1 I graphed the data that I found.
1 I made some conclusions about the data I found and shared with everyone on the Kidproj mailing list.
