 LETTER OF INTRODUCTION
Washington Junior High School
Teacher:  Carolyn Tacey

Hello. We are students from Washington Junior High School in Rock Island, Illinois USA. We are located near the Mississippi River on Iowa's border.  The river provides transportation for boaters and Rock Island has a population of about 42,000.

Four of Mrs. Tacey's classes will be participating in this project. Mrs. Tacey's classes have six Hispanic students, 48 White, 13 Black and one of mixed decent.  Seven of the students are part Native American. As you can tell, we have a diverse population.  Also, three of our students speak Spanish at home and two use sign language.

We are a middle school of 580 students who are in 7th and 8th grade. The 8th graders are split into two teams.  They are the UWK Team which stands for United Warrior Kids and the WOW Team which stands for Warriors of Washington.  We are part of the WOW Team.

Our school year runs from August 25-June 4.  We get two weeks vacation at Christmas and one week at Easter.  We also get three months vacation between each school year. There are four quarters to our school year. We have seven periods in our school day that are 42 minutes each. Our lunch period is 30 minutes long.  We have three choices in the lunch room: bring your own lunch, eat the cafeteria food or eat from the snack line.  We get three minutes to pass to each class.  We also have a computer lab and are hooked to the Internet.  We start school at 8:15 and get out at 2:20.

We participate in many activities.   Sports that our school offers are football, cross country, cheerleading, basketball, track, tennis and volleyball.  Outside of school we like to play softball/baseball, fish, swim, go to movies, shop, hang out with friends, flirt, talk on the phone, surf the Net, skateboard, roller skate, rollerblade, listen to music, play with siblings, dance and bike.  Of course, we also like to go to parties.

We hope you enjoyed hearing about us-- the students from Mrs. Tacey's four classes from Washington Junior High School and thanks for reading about us.  We have enjoyed reading the letters we received so far and we hope to hear from the rest of you soon.  Hope your school year is going well.
