Hi, this is Mrs. Berry's fifth grade class from MILA Elementary in Merritt
Island, Florida. MILA stands for Merritt Island Launching Area. Merritt
Island is a community on the "Space Coast" of Florida, USA. Some
of the parents of the students work at Kennedy Space Center. One
of our business partners is Lockheed Martin, a space agency. We watch
the shuttle
and the rockets launch from our playground!
MILA is one of the five elementary schools in Merritt Island. It is a multicultural school. A boy in our class speaks Vietnamese and is learning English as a second language. There is one student in 3rd grade that speaks French. They have learned English in 1-2 years!
There are approximately 550 students in our school. Our school has Basic Education and Exceptional Education students. Part of our school contains a center for the physically challenged students. Some of those students are mainstreamed into the Basic Ed classrooms.
Our fifth grade class is a "self contained" classroom. We stay with Mrs. Berry for all the major subjects. In our classroom we have six computers. Five of them were donated by a business partner. We also have a Josten's Remedial Reading computer lab with 30 computers and our school will open a new computer writing lab in October with computers donated by our business partners.
Some students at MILA belong to MVC. MVC stands for MILA Video Club and selected students do a live school news broadcast. This broadcast is known as the "Kid Run, Kid Done Production".
Another great thing about MILA is our "Specials". We have PE (physical education), Music, Art, and Guidance. Some of the games we play in our school are: bucket baseball, flag football, gatorball, kickball, basketball, soccer, hockey, and archery.
Some of the activities planned by our Parent Teacher Organization
to raise funds for our school are a Bar-B-Q, Walk-A-Thon, Fall Fest, Car
Wash, and fund raisers. Although MILA is a Title I school (50% of
our
students are on free or reduced lunch), we have much to be proud of,
thanks to our P.T.O. and business partners.
We are looking forward to learning about your communities and
sharing ours with you.
