Our team took a field trip in October to the wonderful Ocean City Boardwalk which is located on the seaside of the Atlantic Ocean. As our buses parked in the gigantic inlet parking lot, we were able to see the sparkling water which extended to the horizon. The sky was blue with a few wispy clouds.
As we walked in groups to the
Boardwalk, we saw several construction workers with their tools and trucks. They were pouring cement to enlarge the Boardwalk. It is being done now because this is the off season. Most tourists come to visit during the summer so that they can swim in the waves and bake in the sun.As we walked and sat down to eat lunch, we listened to the typical sounds of the beach resort. People whooshed by on bikes. We could hear the ruffles made by the spokes of their wheels. Buses screeched their brakes as they dealt with the traffic on the next street. Seagulls soared overhead, crying and laughing. The waves were gently
With the ocean to our East, the stores, restaurants, and arcades are to our left. These buildings are usually open faced so that people can stroll in from the Boardwalk. Some people are walking. Others are riding bikes. Some are sitting on benches and just enjoying the scenary. Overhead, a squadron of seagulls are patrolling. Some stop to strut and seek morsels of food dropped or thrown by the people. The buildings are very colorful, in hopes of luring the tourists inside. Many clever and colorful signs advertise the items such as tee shirts, snacks, lotions, sunglasses, and souvenirs that are within.
smacking the shore in a timeless rhythm. From the stores, we heard the sounds of popcorn popping and
burgers sizzling. Quarters clanked into the arcade games. Shouts of delight and dismay told us whether the gameplayer was winning or losing. From the inlet came the sounds of a boat engine struggling against the current as the fishing boat set out to sea.Over the course of our trip, we tasted a variety of different foods. We enjoyed hot, salty Thrasher’s french fries, splashed with vinegar. Some of us munched on hot, buttery popcorn. Others of our group slurped homemeade ice cream from Dumser’s Dairyland. The aroma of freshly baked dough from the Dough Roller tempted some
people to choose pizza for their lunch. Refreshing Coca Cola was sipped along with the snacks.During our fieldtrip, we encountered many smells. Some were pleasant aromas, others were nasty. In the Inlet Parking Lot, we could smell the exhaust of the diesel engine of our bus. There was also the smell of rotting fish from some bait left by a fisherman as he gave up on his efforts to catch “the big one”. As we neared the stores,
the air carried the aromas of the foods that were being cooked. The air smelled like a smorgasbord. Popcorn, pizza, hot dogs, funnel cakes, chocolate fudge...everything smelled extra delicious in the fresh sea air.
We hope you enjoyed our description of the Boardwalk in Ocean City, Maryland. Please come to visit whenever you get a chance.
The most impressive sensation on the beach is that of the sun beating down on your neck. In the summer, it can blister your skin. In October, it now feels warm on your skin. A cool breeze from the ocean kept us comfortable as we played soccer and other games after lunch. The sand felt sticky on our shoes in the morning. As the time passed and the sun dried out the sand, it didn’t stick to our shoes as much. By the end of the day, our backs and feet were aching and everyone was tired. It felt good to sit down on the bus and ride back to school.
