The Cruz-Johnson U-Pick Farm
Kent Learning Center, Seattle, Washington, USA
Teacher:  Diane Smith

Our essay is about our trip to the Cruz-Johnson produce U-pick farm in the Kent Valley near Seattle, WA, USA.

In the late 1800's the Kent Valley was settled by farmers. The Green River flows through the valley. Farmers could take their produce to Seattle by boat or wagon to sell. That is how the famous Pike Street Market in
downtown Seattle was started.

Today most of the farmland has been filled with businesses and the Southcenter Mall. Cruz-Johnson is one of the few farms left.  The farm is owned by Mr. & Mrs. Johnson. Mrs. Johnson has lived there all
her life. she likes living there because it is peaceful.

Seven people went to the farm. We saw pumpkins, dried flowers, Indian corn, and lots of crows. Some of the pumpkins were rotting, Some were lopsided, and some were fat. Some of the pumpkins were really squishy and
had holes in them. Tyler stepped in a pumpkin and when we got home, Sasha, the puppy licked it off his shoe.
There were lots of crows in the field. They were big, black, and ugly. They made a really loud cawing sound. It sounded like someone cackling with a sore throat.

Going to the farm was great, we each picked a pumpkin to bring home. Some of the pumpkins weighed over 30 pounds. Some of the crows looked like they did, too.
