The Peacefulness of the Minnesota Lake
Mississippi Horizons School, Brainerd, Minnesota, USA
Teacher:  Karen Ogdahl

Imagine yourself in a tent in the middle of the summer, camping. It's late and even the sun is fast asleep, but you can't sleep. Between the hard, rough ground, the strange noises from beyond the tent, and the people in your tent snoring, it's impossible!

You unzip your tent carefully and step outside. As your barefeet touch the cool, slightly damp grass, you zip the tent back up, turn on your flashlight, and look around. To your right are dozens of pine and oak trees with a path in the middle. In front of you is the campfire which has long since gone out. To your left lurks the dark outline of the large cabin where most of the adults are sleeping in large, comfy beds. Behind you lies the beautiful lake which you had been swimming in previously. You decide to go back to the lake to pass the time away.

So you start your descent down the hard, slightly uneven, wooden steps. You pause when your feet hit the soft, squishy sand on the beach. Then you continue walking and you go up one step and there you are, on the dock. You walk slowly across the long, slender walkway in the water. You have to watch your step as you continue across because there are a couple of loose boards.    The dock bounces as you move, and the lake is flowing past you steadily almost pushing you across it. You finally reachthe end and you slowly sit down and dangle your feet over the edge into the dark shallow water. You look up at the stars in the sky and think wow! You can hear the occasional thump, thump of the neighbors loud music, but besides that, it is absolutely peaceful. You can see a light in the distance blinking on and off almost to the beat of the music. You lie out there for a while just gazing at the stars and you catch yourself starting to doze off because it is so calm.

You go back up the stairs to your tent, crawl into your sleeping bag, then fall fast asleep.
