Plaça Catalunya
I.E.S. Parc de l'Escorxador, Barcelona, Spain
Teacher:  Carmen Fonseca
Plaça Catalunya is a nice a very peculiar place in Barcelona. It is supposed to be the center of Barcelona. It's a very handy place to meet. It is always full of different kinds of people. You always feel fine there, and free, and never alone. It is round and quite big. There are many statues and lots of street lamps. There is a very big fountain and it changes shape. You always look at it when you go by. Plaça Catalunya has six ways to get in. One of these ways is through The Ramblas. There are pigeons and people that sell food for them. Who hasn't got a photograph feeding pigeons? There is always something going on in Plaça Catalunya.

Today is nine o'clock and the ground in Plaza Catalunya is wet and slippery. The gardeners are working. I didn't realize there were so many trees and birds. It's a bit cold and it's quite noisy I must say. I can see Banks - three or four big banks- a Hard Rock Cafe - Habitat, El Corte Inglés, beautiful modernist houses and buses, many buses. People are very sleepy. It is not crowded this morning. There is a man selling bird's food and a very handsome boy skating in the square. I'm sure he is a foreigner.  The fountain is not working today and I don't know why. There are at least six subway entrances. We are walking towards one because today we are going out for lunch. We are going to Las Planas. It's about 20 minutes by train from Plaza Catalunya. The train is really fast. It is black orange and white. We left Plaça Catalunya but we know we will see her (it is female for
us) again later in the afternoon so we won't have time to miss her. It has been a nice trip.

We are now in the middle of nature. It is forest, you can hardly see people there except for the owner of the restaurant. We are going to cook our lunch. Las Planas is a place where you can light your own fire. It's prepared for that. So we took our tools and started. The groups were already made and now we can feel the smell of burnt wood and paper. It is all fixed for the barbecue. We are having chicken, Catalan sausages, pork, lamb well every student brought what they really liked. The smoke is terrible and the smell of food too but it is fun. Oh, a group of "third age" people decided to come to the same place on the same day. They are complaining about the noise. They say we are too young to understand. Well, what can you do?

We had a terrific day. Everything was fine. We played cards, talk about the group and play games and also went for a walk. Time to come back. Plaça Catalunya is waiting for us; the train left us there and we have got to walk home from there. We feel very comfortable there. It is like a friend, She is always there welcoming you. It is different now. It isn't wet but dry. Too many people walking around. The pigeons are tired and feel sick from eating. Too many photographs feeding them. Poor pigeons...  There are hundreds of people going around. A group is singing; many people are waiting for their friends to come. They are waiting patiently. You can see that but the teachers are telling us it is time to go home. Hope you enjoy this.
